Anyone/Everyones opinion will be greatly received!

I currently own an 80sx, only had it since September. The thing is I am restricted to a 1.2 due to the fact of my convictions :( But having checked up only yesterday, I no longer have to declare my convictions once next summer is here (2005) No matter how much I love my 1.2, I'm yearning for a little more power.

Which leads me to my predicament which hopefully the net opinion can help me make my mind up.

Do I...

1> Bite my lip, keep my 80sx, and smarten it up As if i did this on a larger engined car i prob couldn't afford the insurance.

or

2> Buy a HGT, this summer and spend the next year renovating it; having the engine stripped and rebuilt etc, knowing that next summer it will be A1 when I come to insure it. For piece of mind. And over the year kit it up subtly?

The main factors to consider is I will be looking for a job in the next few months, have already been approached to work but unfortunatley they wanted to employ me straight away and not after my HND! The starting wage what i will be looking at is from 16k-18k.

The other thing is that I have only just had my car Angetuned, SS filter fitted, had momo gearlever /handbrake gaitor kit fitted/ race pedals.

I am considerably leaning towards the side of getting a HGT, but need other opinions to take the 'blinkers' from my eyes.

Also if you recommend getting a HGT how much would I be looking at to get the engine recon? As understandably these cars have more than likely been booted and i don't fancy bein stumped with the bill for a new engine unexpectedly,

Please offer me some advice, this is just a thought at the min but with full time job prospects coming soon, and i have nothing else to burn my wages on at the min.

Mike.

Re: Re: Re: Advice Needed!

The insurance is ok, i have checked that out for quotes and is very reasonable, i have ploughed a bit a money into my 80sx though, and currently have the full indy kit sat in the attic, so if it goes id have to sell thek kit.

how much for the kit i may be interested if you want to sell it that is

dunno bout anyone else but i am 21 with 1 yrs no claims and got a quote from norwich union on a HGt and it was 800 quid. i only been driving two years as well. its a very reasonable car to insure - for me at least.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Advice Needed!

Personally I would get an HGT.

All I would do to it is change the alloys (I think the HGT's as standard are a bit boring) and lower it by 40mm, then it would be perfect. You need to do a lot more to a 1.2 to make it look as good as the HGT. Plus the amount of posts on here saying, "Just lashed a Golf GTI" etc is quite high and sounds fun.

Anyway being 18 and a student my 1.4sx is all I can afford, I would love to be in your predicament.

was your question 1.2 16v or 2.0 20v?
i think that answers itself :p

Make sure it's a 147HGT

I bought a 155HGT some months ago. The insurance group is 14, on the 155, and 13 on the 147. I can't believe there's a great deal of difference in performance between the two. Plus the 147 is far more tuneable than the 155. I pay around £750 fully comp, 5+ years no claims and I'm 29, no points.

So don't even think about the 80sx, get yourself a 147HGT and you won't look back!

Re: Make sure it's a 147HGT

lol @ Gaz: You'd love to be in my predicament, hmmmm just run this by you.

Lost my licince at 18, banned for 24 months, got my licence back after re sitting an extended test and being assessed just last september. Now my insurance premium is 5 fold that of what i was paying at 17, lucky to be insured as a named driver on a 1.2!! Have a string of convictions the length of my arm, which i HAVE to declare as well as 6 penalty points! All my fault I know, but i think you can wait the extra 3 yrs or so, and avoid the route i went.

Anyway, what is the difference regarding the 147 and the 155, as in interior specs etc does anyone hve any pics to compare.

Also what reg did the 147 run up to? Is there really that much extra tuning that can be done on the 147?

Think I've made my mind up now lads thanks, any extra info would be great
