Advice Needed - Major engine problems

Saturday night, started engine in a car park, had stood still for around 1 hour. Crawled out of the car park and felt no different. Went to pull out onto the main road, only just made it out and a very very loud noice coming from the engine. My dad instantly said take it easy home as we thought the exhaust had broken.

The top speed my car would do was about 25mph. The rev counter was increasing as if i was increasing in speed but i wasn't. It was as if my clutch was slipping really badly. Only with an added extra loud noice.

Once i got home i checked that the exhaust was ok before backing into the drive, however after poping the bonnet up i was ensured that the noice was from the induction filter. Therefore i decided to put the original air box back on and reset the ECU (Thinking it had flipped some how and was trying to puck too much air in.)

1.5 hours later: reconnected battery and... no difference what so ever.

I've got bad thoughts through my mind such as...

Cam belts slipped,
A cylinder's not working,
a spark plug's ****ed (therefore no spark)

Please reasure me.

My machanic's coming out tonight to have a look at it. I don't dare drive it anymore incase the cam belt has slipped.

Cheers, Ollie

only thing i could think is that standing the car on idle for that long has shafted a spark plug or two. Idling for too long does effect the engine wear quite a bit i think.

1) taking the battery off for 1.5hrs won't make a gnatts ass of a difference, it has to be overnight.

2) how about telling us the engine type and giving a better description of the noise?

Major engine problems

Marko, it had been standing for that period, not idoling, Sorry!

Tom, Overnight, i suggest the advice is updated that is given on bravo guide, it states a min. of 40 mins.

1.8, 116,000 miles. Runs sweet as a nut (normally) Had it's cam belt change about 6,000-7,000 miles ago.
The sound is exactly like the sound from my induction filter only amplified by 5 times.

Re: Major engine problems

The guide is wrong. :)

It sounds like you have a sticking valve or a burnt valve. You let it sit idling for an hour?

Re: Re: Major engine problems

I think he meant parked, after it had been started and then stopped....?

Re: Re: Major engine problems

Have you tried it today?

Is it still the same ?

Reason I ask is my car used to do something shich sounds similar. In the morning it would feel fine getting off the drive and below about 2,000 rpm. But when accelerating it just felt like it wasn't going anywhere, I travel on the M-Way every day and it was getting up to over 5,000 rpm in fifth doing 45-50 mph. It felt like the engine was being strangled ?!? But when I went out at lunch time (5 hours later) it was running fine, then the next day back to madness. In the end put it down to dodgy fuel as i'd been using s/market fuel for a while- ran a tank of s-unleaded and redex through and it's been fine since.

Dunno if it sounds similar or not, hope it helps...

I allready had a problem similar to that... turned out to be the clutch, it was worned out. I had to replace it all (it came in a kit) and costed (Fiat service) 300 € (I´m in Portugal)

Re: Re: Advice Needed - Major engine problems

If your engine revs are increasing but you are not changing speed, then there is most definately a problem with the clutch! I can't think of anything else that can cause such a thing. The horrible noise may or may not be linked to this (probably is, as they started at the same time.) Unless there is something trying to stop the gearbox turning - then I suppose its possible that the clutch is slipping as the engine tries to turn the gearbox that doesn't want to go. But I imagine if such a strange and elaborate fault has occurred then it would require a great deal of revs and effort to make the car move anywhere. Suspect the clutch initially!

your gearbox mountings could have broken or not been put back properly after work (clutch replacement?) and the gearbox could have dropped onto the driveshaft - beleive it or not happened to me - same symptoms

Cheers peeps.

Had the machanic out and seems to think totally different from all you. He seems to think that one of the three sensors on the air intake pipe area is shagged. More likely the sensor that sensors the amount of air entering the engine. He says it's got the symtoms of the engine wanting too much air, therefore increasing the noice through the filter.

Because, it still idols lovely and is smooth whilst in transport, although it hardly moves.

I've got no idea!!!!! Head ****!

Trouble is i cannot try all the things everone has recomended and adviced me as it would probably work out cheaper to buy a new engine.

Anyway, he's recomended me to have it put on a diagnostic machine. Therefore it's going in tomorrow.

I'll let you know what the outcome is...

Ollie

The most efficient option (but often the most painful) is to take it to a Fiat Dealership and get it on the diagnostics.

Re: Re: Advice Needed - Major engine problems

He did not say the injection light came on which usually means the fiat monkey will just say 'nuffin wrong wiv it gov, £40 please'.

Re: Re: Advice Needed - Major engine problems

Exactly, however like i said i've got it booked in today on the diagnostic at a local highly recomended garage. I'll post what he tells me is wrong. Or should i say what he thinks is wrong with it.
