Technical Advice needed car juddering?

Hi all

I have a 58 Bravo Sport 2.0 ltr diesel and if I am driving around town at say? 1200rpm I get a judder which can be quite severe. I have been told that it is the particulate filter as under hard acceleration it is fine. The car has covered about 20000 miles and does a mixture of short and long runs in a normal week. The last time the light came on saying that the filter was clogged was months and months ago and to clear it I have just driven at about 50 - 60 mph for 10 mins.

Does anyway have any advice on this? is it what I think? if so any ideas how to stop the juddering? is it something else?

If it was the filter it'd be blocked and the light would come on. Could be EGR?

What's an EGR? is it expensive??

Exhaust has recirculate valve. Can be pricey. Plenty of info on here

That is your problem! 1200 rpm .. are you also trying to accelerate?
You are killing that engine.
Remember that at lower revs the strain on engine parts is bigger and that there is not enough oil flow to lubricate all components.
You might be saving some fuel at the price of an engine.

Rev it to at least ~1700rpm (being a diesel) !

I had a similar problem, that after i came down from a mountain pass, practically rolling most of the time, breaking and slowing down(8km). When I got to the bottom I would use some gas and would get a check engine light and car would go all juddery, sometimes if I gave it gas and flawed it in second straight away it fixed the problem, other times it took longer... hated it so took it to fiat after it happened about 5-7 times and turned out it was my coils + spark plugs, well both were replaced. Hope that helps you. Haven't had that problem ever again since then. Also tell me do you see black smoking coming out of your exhaust when this happens by any chance... the first time it starts to judder?

Hmmm dont see any black smoke at all . Is that because yours is petrol and mine diesel?

I have exactly the same thing happen to my 2.0 multijet. Mines done 23k miles. It's just characteristic and nothing to worry about I don't think. Mines in for an MOT and oil and filter change in November so will ask if they can clean out the EGR valve at the same time.

It's good to ensure the revs no lower than 1400-1500 as driving with such low revs isn't efficient or good for your car.

I've been told that another factor to consider is more regular oil changes as old oil can block and damage the DPF filter. I always aim to change oil at least once a year. Worth it in the long run.

Give it a good thrashing every week or so as well, don't be scared to go all out and give it a good run and use all 165hp!

Ok sounds like good advice. Would be nice to know that if they do clean out the EGR did it perform better?

Update. Bit late I know but I just git the garage to change the erg valve for a new one and problem solved. I always run the car on shell nitro diesel as well.
