I used the search, I was denied as the terms were too common :(

I'm investigating the possibility of adding a Turbo to my none Turboed engine. I thought I would search the net and ask a Turbo manufacture what they can do but I don't know the names of any companies that make Turbo's.

How complicated would it be to add a Turbo to my 1.6 Carb Tipo engine? I'm dismantling the engine and Gearbox when the sun comes out to play and cleaning and tuning everything up. Good old Recondition job :)

I don't want something massive that will blow up, just something to squeeze enough mad power out so that I can laugh at BMW's and say weeeeeee :p

I know it sounds cheap but I want to add it uprating as little secondary components as possible.

The suspension is taken care of. The rear drums may need converting and the camshaft may need changing but I don't want to have to add anything crazy expensive.

Would you recommened it?

Also, I don't want an engine swap. Same engine, just with a Turbo :D

For a starting point, look at the turbo Centos.

It all depends on how far you want to go - although a few psi of boost still isn't *that* cheap - you'll still have to have bespoke engine management, oil cooler, bespoke inlet/exhaust tubing, possibly an upgraded clutch (a few turbo Centos have the 1400 Stilo flywheel and clutch fitted), the induction may need rerouting, the cooling system will need checking and possibly uprating, plus I've bound to have forgotten a few things. You may even need bespoke pistons, depending on what the engine CR is as standard and how much boost you want.

In short, it could be a load of heartache and cost a lot of money.

Personally if the UT/ Punto GT will fit fairly easily, this is the route I would be looking at following.

As your car is a 1.6, then why not investigate getting a 1.6 turbo from a Lancia Delta HF Turbo, I'm pretty sure its the same basic engine, so will bolt in. This engine in standard trim gives 140hp, has the correct lowered compression and I would say in the end would work out easier than trying to turbo charge yours, like fabricating a manifold to fit turbo, ensuring the inlet/carb can accept +pressure, fuelling it correctly etc etc

Oh look there's one for sale http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LANCIA-1600-T...ryZ10404QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is the right solution!:worship:

isn't the delta hf turbo a dohc? the tipo 1.6 is the sohc same as the the 1.4 used in punto/uno.

Yeah you're right, but in Europe the Punto's GT's run the Delta engine for bigger power rather than continue with the 1.4. in fact sure I've seen Uno running them as well, think there was a met.blue one for sale on fleabay recently with this conversion, so on bigger Tipo must be even easier.

I know I said I didn't want a new engine but it seems like the cheaper, wiser option.

Just a shame I don't have £100 around just at the moment. Will keep a look out closer to modification time, providing I go through with it.

Thanks all :)

If I were you I would source a decent 1.4 Turbo lump and all the bits from an MK2 Uno tub. The block is from the same family and so all the tipo mounts should match up, as will alot of the hosing and electricals for the basic engine. I also expect the gearbox and linkages will match too.

All that would need to be done would to uprate the fueling and install the loom from the UT and then all the wiring etc.

Straight off your looking at 120hp easily tunable upto a reliable 170-180 and beyond if you want to!

Its also been known to make a 1.6 turbo uno using the block from the tipo but it would probably require low comp pistons etc so not quite straight forward.

I think if you really want to turbo it then go for an UT engine. Makes sence to me (y)

Otherwise, how about being the first (maybe?) UK tipo with a 20vt from a coupe :D The bay is big enough (y)
