I coudn't get a quote from my normal insurer as the car is on a Q plate, and the date of last registration was 2003.

Ebay says that the car is a 1997 model which is obviously wrong.

I was going to bid on it, but seeing as I went to confused dot com and tried to get quotes, the cheapest I could get was £1200ish, so now I'm going to leave it.

Just thoguht I'd warn others about the Q plate problem, though it may be much cheaper for you if you have been driving more than a year and a half.

England is so screwed up. What difference does a number plate make?

Especially when it seems to be incorrectly registered.

I don't get why this one ended up on a Q plate

If I recall the regulations correctly, to retain its original plate a shell must use a certain number of major components that originally came with the shell from new. Each component has a score, and if the total score of the components is over a certain amount then the original registration is retained. If it is below, i.e. it uses a number of major components from other models/ vehicles, even if it is a different car BUT THE SAME MODEL, technically it is no longer an original car and will be issued with a 'Q' plate. This is also why kit cars are often issued with Q plates as the original date of manufacturer cannot be determined as it uses parts from a number of different donors.

Technically Louie, your sleeper uses none of the major components that the 45S originally came with so should be on a Q plate if the rules were rigidly enforced. But who's to argue that it officially only had an engine change ;) That's why when reshelling a vehicle you don't mention that major suspension components/ brakes/ drivetrains etc. have been changed otherwise the DVLA may want to issue a Q plate ;) ;) ;)

Q plates are issued to heavily modified cars (kit cars, some custom cars, 'bitzas') or cars with vague/ no history. They're seen as high risk as a result and therefore the insurance for them is considerably higher.

basicly, Q plates are cars that don't have any ID. The shell used to build the UT into obviously had no I.D or the shell used was actually declared scrap. so a Q plate HAS to be issued.

As for louies for example, that doesn't have to be a Q plate as its actually just a modded 45S and therefore nothing illegal at all.

Its like my white uno 1.0L turbo replica. Its not a reshell, its getting built into a turbo bit by bit while its on the road, so therefore its a modded 1.0 uno and is 100% legal to keep its original reg plate. As long as when u do an engine swap u declare it to the DVLA its fine.
