A cheap DIY cold-air-induction kit with heatshield ?

I know a lot have been posted about air filters etc but has anyone actually DIY one ? i'm currently using an open-pod K&N cone air filter but would love to get the piperx after reading all the raves but a bit too pricey for me. Has anyone tried to DIY a box to fit the air-filter inside (sort of like a DIY 'air-box') and then connect a tube direct from the front grille into the air-box ?

yep it works. Just make sure the inlet pipe is big enough

vieri, haha you are here too? well, maybe you should take a look at my arc super cold air induction box. amde of materials to bust our heat from getting into the intake. let's meet and see how it goes since what you are describing is quite something similar to my arc.
