Technical '98 sei 899 engine noise trouble :(

sei with 899 engine, about 68k miles
seems to be making unhealthy knocking noises... my parents had been using the car a bit while i was away at uni... my dad says it could be valves or tappets
oil level is good
doesnt seem to lack in power, and runs ok, apart from the noise.
i will get a sound clip or video to add up to help illustrate

any suggestions what would be best to do pleeeease

Take long thin screwdriver, place one end (preferably the blunt, handle end) in your ear, then place the other end on the engine at various points to try and tie down the source of the noise.

Start at the top and listen for tappet noise.

What grade of oil are you using?

thanks for the tips rallycinq, ill give that a try as soon as possible.
umm i cant remember the grade of the oil, although ive ben using the same as that recomended in the handbook... (i dont have that with me, if anyone could possibly have a look please.....) thanks

in the user manual it says u should use 15/40 multigrade mineral oil, good luck with fixing it ! hope you don't have the same problem as me

the tappets keep on flying out the gear , even after david help me put a new ring in it ..... and this happened a good few times .

Everytime it happens the car will lose power. but yours hasn't so, don't think is the same problem (which is a good thing )
