Technical 5th gear keeps kicking out

Hi,

hello to all,

I have started having a problem with 5th gear it has started throwing itself into neutral are there any obvious reasons for this or anything a can check to solve it or is it a bit more sinister!!

Common occurrence I'm afraid in older Ducatos, the 5th gear is a bolt on part and not integral with gearbox. The gear is lubricated by oil thrown thro from gearbox but does not do the job correctly and over time the teeth get worn away until there's not enough to keep them meshed. Last time I did this it was in 2005 on a 1997 2.5td model and the gear set cost £86. Relatively easy to change, but you need to find the parts first.

Yep its a new 5th gear needed.I set off for 3 weeks holiday in the motorhome heading for Dover to catch the ferry to Calais.Got as far as Sheffield and 5th gear would not stay in mesh.The gearbox was fine apart from that so we decided to continue with just 4 gears.No problem.When we got back from holiday my mechanic friend and I dropped the box and found a transmission engineering shop who sorted it out.You might find this an option if you dont feel too confident about tackling the repair yourself.As I remember it was at reasonable cost,much cheaper than perhaps the garage who would probably charge you labour to take the box off when in fact it can be repaired in situ so I believe.Hope this helps and good luck.

Yes it is repairable in situ, remove offside front wheel and you get access to the 5th gear housing attached to side of gearbox with 6 or 7 socket screws, you don't even have to empty the gear oil.
Remember to clean the lubrication holes thro into gearbox and soak the new parts in gear oil before fitting. Max time 2 hours and a one man job, no room for two. Good luck

Having just driven Motor home around Normandy and back to Scotland in 4th gear ( yes it started jumping out not far from Calais) its now time to get 5th gear/synchromesh fixed.
Off to gearbox specialists on Monday. I am told parts hard to get. Can any one suggest supplier?

How about finding a 6 speed box?
Would be fantastic for long distance, and could work out cheaper than all that labour and parts to fix yours?

As I said in previous post it was 2005 the last time I got a 5th gear set and I picked it up in Poole from Fiat Dealer on my way back to Scotland.
I wouldn't go for a 6 speed box as the gearing would be too low for the constant 3500kg weight but the newer 5 speed box from the later model is a straight swap and the gears are all in the box, not the bolt on overdrive you have at the moment.

Krosus- when did they change this setup? I have an 05, and would maybe like the higher top gear everyone moans about as being too high. Tho' me moho is 5.2 t loaded, thatt may be TOO high, but it feels stressed on the Mway over 60- but will do 80+ if asked.
However, it would have to be an easy-ish swap!

Hi, I don't understand the question, but I'll give you info and you maybe be able to fathom out your answer. I've a motorhome on a Ducato 2.8jtd chassis, 5 gear box, weight rating at 4200kgs. No remap of ECU. This rig struggles in 5th gear up slight inclines and annoys the hell out of the cruise control, I feel that if the ratio was lower everything would be fine, obviously for steeper inclines a lower gear would be required but for motorways at 70 it's smooth and relatively quiet in 5th, it certainly never feels or sounds like it needs another gear, unlike the wife's Mx5.
I think that a 6 speed box would just increase this problem as power to weight ratio would be insufficient to maintain a decent constant speed.

Things would be better because there is not such a jump between gears so every time you change your on the power, that's why wagons have lots of gears.

Mine is 5.2t mptlm, it feels like it needs a higher top on motorways, my preference is for lower revs when cruising, It does indeed cope well on all the trios we have made so far to wales, on the hills encountered. So maybe best left alone. Wondered if the box in mine was the 'afterthought' 5th housing, in which case not too bad to play with given an alternate set of gears.
