hi guys
I have a 57 plate fiat ducato 120 multijet lwb/ hi top
i wonder is anyone can shed soome light on a problem for me.
it started as a glow plug light flashing for about a minute after van had started, On next start up the orange engine light was illuminated and the glow plug light flashed again for about a minute then went off, the van drives fine, no loss in power nothing.
On next attempted start up, the van turns over but will not start, after buying all the relevant coloured leads and modified elm327 interface, i downloaded the free version of fiatecuscan and have come up with the fault code u1701 ???
it says, "check the following:
1. engine control node disconnected from the network
2. the engine control node fails to transmit data on CAN correctly
3. check the diagnosis on the engine control unit
4. ABS control unit faulty
The reason for this fault is that the ecu did not receivesignal from the sensor. The fault is present now. Take appropriate action to fix this sensor fault. Dashboard warning light was not activated for this fault"

Can anyone point me in the right direction, please

many thanks Phil

Hi Phil. Did you get to the bottom of this one as I now have the same error code? Cheers. Steve.

ECU wiring harness from the engine connects to the ECU behind the under bonnet fuse box remove the fuse box lid for easier access to check its still tight the ECU can be easily removed to check the connector (remember to disconnect the battery first) it has a plastic slide mechanism to lock it in place one connector goes to the engine and one into the fuse box . As you say you've an ABS fault as well id be suspecting the fuse box end (water ingress dirty terminals) as they both join into the main loom (CAN network) in the same region ,Id also be checking the earth straps for bad connections as CAN being low voltage hates bad eaths more than anything Cheers Adam

Hi Adam. This was an old thread I reserve tend as I would like to have known if it had been fixed. I have done all you have suggested already but found nothing. Very frustrating.

I've just had a 14 plate ducato come through the workshop with this fault, on further investigation into this i found the n/s ecu plug loom had been chaifing against the fuse box bracket, all though you can not see through the insulation tape, I striped back the tape and found 5 wires chaifed, repaired them and the fault cleared hope that helps

I don't suppose you have any photos to help guide me on this one do you??

Realy easy, remove the n/s headlamp: 2 screws holding the top cover, 1 screw holding the bottom cover on, be carfull they snap easily, then use a 10mm socket to remove 3 bolts holding the headlight in, carfully pull the headlight out and disconect the plug, use a 10mm socket to undo the 2 nuts holding the ecu cover on, very carfully pull out the yellow tab on the n/s ecu connector, and lift over the securing arm to release the plug (Be very carfull when you do this and especially when you plug it in as you can bend ecu pins and then you're be in all sorts of trouble) unwrap the insulation tape and inspect the wiring, there's about 35 wires, just have a look through them, unfortunately I didn't gets any pics when I done the job but hope that helps

Ah right ok. I have been that far in previously. When you say the n/s is that left or right as you look from the front of the van? How far from the ecu plug were they worn through?

N/s is the passenger side,
Once you remove the ecu plastic cover, you'll see where the wiring loom chaffs, it's generally cable tied to the bracket, and that's where the damage happens,

Thanks for the clarification. Mine is a LHD. ;)

I've checked all the way down there and no joy sadly. Thanks though.

Hi yes it was fixed, I bought a Ecu kit off eBay with keys bsm Ecu and obd unit under dash and dash, although wasn’t sure I needed that, all from the same vehicle fitted and started, just had to fit many other parts after ie throttle control unit brakes etc as it stood for a while
