ive just taken the box out of the panda striped it down other than the 3rd syncro hub being worn its in preety good nick for not having any oil in it! the problem with the whine in fifth gear (i think ) is the bearings have picked up due to no oil and have been spinning in the housing ive got new bearings and will put them back in with locktiite retainer i was wondering if there would be any other reason why fifth would whine? as i dont want to put it back in and it still whines

I've never had a 4x4 gearbox apart, but gear whine is normally due to vibration between the mating faces of the gears rather than the bearings. Of course if your bearings are very worn that will affect the clearances between the meshing gears, so changing them might sort it. Don't know about the Panda, but some gears have to be pre-loaded on assembly via a deformable spacer, if you've seen anything like that in the box then you would have to be very careful to torque everything up correctly otherwise it will whine like buggery, generally find it on diffs though. Probably not much help, sorry! Make sure you use a proper non e.p. oil for the box, I use Millers Classic Gear Oil and it did quieten the box a little.
Good luck with it.

There you go!!!... http://www.performance-oils.co.uk/acatalog/Millers.html

I have used Coma diesel oil in my 4x4 box..as recomended by coma and my local motor factors and have to say its been great!!
There was a big thread about this question of which oil is best and for me the cost made my mind up...£12 for 5lts...Yeah it may have been a slight risk..but its paid off!!..
