Hi everyone, just wanted some opinions on my wifes 20VT LE.

She recently came in to a bit of money and decided to buy something with a little bit more guts than the 1.2 Panda she had. As I had a 20V Turbo myself a couple of years back I wasn't concerned over the usual issues associated with the car and went out and got her an LE with 65000 varified miles on the clock. It needed a few bits doing to it but nothing major as the belts had just been changed and all 4 tyres were brand new.

I was out driving it a few weeks back and made a wrong turn so I stopped to turn around, I depressed the clutch and held it there to put it in reverse but before I selected gear I heard what is best described as a metallic clanging sound like a spring being released from tension. The gearbox still selects gears but No1 is a bit sticky since that day.
Also when you depress the clutch pedal you can feel a vibration through the pedal like the engine is hunting or something is out of balance. There is also quite a judder on take up of drive which worries me more than anything else cos the same thing happened to our Panda just before the gearbox threw a hub straight out the front of its casing into the bell housing. I'm praying the first motion bearings are not gone!!!
Down the motorway between work and home I put my foot down in 6th and was horrified to see the revs climb and the car stay at the same speed so obviously the clutch slipped. It hasn't done it since and I did intend doing the clutch anyway cos its one of the things that hasn't been done yet but I wanted to invite suggestions as to what that damn noise was and what the judder may be.

Regards

The clutch friction plate has a set of springs that prevent judder when you take up drive - it sounds like one or more of these has failed, which means the clutch is dead

About £400 to supply & fit at a good Coupe specialist

Whereabouts in the country are you?

Doh - spotted your location - Go to Motormech in Birmingham - speak to Paul, tell him I sent you ;)

Sounds like a simple clutch.......Could also be a master/slave though no?

Thanks for the replies to my post.
I was really worried it was the box cos of it being 6 speed, so getting one would be a nightmare.
I can change the clutch myself no problem so I'll probably get it off the road and do the clutch and recon the head at the same time.

Thanks again gents

I've seen them on Ebay for £400+ but that said I guess Ebay is not the best place to look. I did however find a guy on Ebay who reconditions gearboxes and he charges £10 for a strip down diagnosis. The only problem is you don't get your gearbox rebuilt when you get it back unless you pay for the recon and the rebuild.

I'll take the box out and go from there but with the mileage reasonably low I would have thought it would be ok.

Did a bit of digging, £300 seems the going rate for a 6 speed privately. Joe/Countrycruising (FCSS, a spares company for the coupé) charges £550 for a second hand 6 speed box, he's not really that cheap anymore sadly.

I have a few bits to do on the car as well as the clutch but I'm concerned about leaving it too long before I do the work. I'll take it off the road once I have finished all the work I have to do on my Multipla, my Grande Punto and my daughter's Cinq Sporting !!!

Updates as I progress with pics !!!!

If you are doing the clutch yourself, remember to change the gearbox oil at the same time. As well as the main seal.
Gearbox oil takes ages to feed in though! ;-)

I changed the gearbox oil on my last Coupe and the trick is to gently heat it on a hob whilst is still in its tin and then pour it through a small funnel. It doesn't have to be boiling hot to be less viscous and you don't want to burn the oil or ruin its integrity so hand hot will suffice.
I think from memory the whole process took about 20 minutes.
