hi, can anyone tell me if it would be possible to combine a 20v and a 20vt engine together? i had the idea of basicly using a 20vt complete engine and swoping con rods with a 20v for higher compression.
20v 10:1 20vt 8.5:1
If that wouldnt work but you can think of something that would please let me know.

cheers (y)

What are you trying to do? get more power from a 20VT or run a 20VT without a turbo?

no, a 20vt engine with 20v conrods i think?

the reason a turbo has lower compression is to prevent pre detonation. the turbo puts more air into the same cylinder.

As there is now more air,
when the piston compresses the air and fuel mixture the mixture will self combust before the spark has chance to ignite it as the mixture cant be compressed any more and under this huge amount of pressure and friction the air fuel mix will simply self explode.

Problem with this is that the piston will still be travelling upwards, so the explosion of compressed air/fuel which has happened too early and will push the piston down whilst the piston is being lifted on the crank. The end result will be a broken piston, rod or crank.

Therefore turbo's have more room between the piston and cylinder head (lower compression) allowing the larger volume of air to be compressed safely and ignited at a precise time via the spark plug.

I know that the 20V pistons are 'just strong enough' for the standard car so I wouldn't want to put extra stress on them via the turbo.

Also do they physically fit? as the 20V engine is a different unit to to the 20VT not simply the turbo motor de-rated.
