Hi All..

I have a 2018 Fiat Ducato with the 6 speed comfortmatic gearbox and would like detailed instructions on how to replace the gearbox oil.

Regards

Adam

Hi all..

Actually.. it seems I’ve answered my own question!

My biggest issue was that nothing I could find online, video or documentation matched the physical make up of my gearbox.

Some info showed filling oil through a breather with a cap. Others a cap accessed through the battery tray compartment. Even my drain hole looked different.

Turns out my gearbox is code: 55234830
Which doesn’t seem to be very common these days.

I was going to replace the gearbox oil in the Hope that it would solve the delay between gear changes. After researching the comfortmatic though, I realise this is a trait of the robotized nature so I will leave it alone and :)

Hi

The underlying 6 speed gearbox (Type M40) is basically the same as used in manual Ducatos with high power/high torque engines. Filling arrangement details are scarce. Normally gearbox oil isn't routinely changed, so you would only do it if you suspected contamination e.g. by water ingress or condensation from being laid up a long time. I think it unlikely that delay between gear changes would be affected by the gearbox oil.

There are also two separate reservoirs, one for the clutch fluid and the other for the hydraulic fluid for the high pressure servos used to perform gear changing. Check and top up if required. See picture for details of fluids. Don't get the two mixed up !

On the M40 gearbox (Comfortmatics and 150BHP and over variants) the filler plug is on the front face as in the picture just above the speedo (?) drive. Easy to fill with a funnel and length of tubing - no need to use the breather as with the MLGUn boxes. There is also a hex plug at the rear of the box by the final drive which I did read someone suggesting was a level plug but I didn't use that myself, just opted to put back the same amount as came out (2.85L).

In the robot ONLY SELESPEED FLUID.

The handbook states automatic transmission fluid grade dexron III can be used - dont unless as a temporary emergency measure.

Old thread but would like to jump on please to ask for information on fluids to purchase
Ducato 3.0 160 multijet
The m40 box comfortmatic
Are these the correct fluids
Dot 4 small reservoir for clutch actuation
Large reservoir behind smalll clutch is hydraulic
Then gear box oil 75w-85
Are all these correct to change or refill
My van is the 59 plate

First, the front round pot is dot 4 brake fluid. You suck out the reservoir the refill to 5mm of rim, then use the bleed screw nozzle thing of the slave cylinder and a vacuum hand pump to suction bleed. Do it in stages so you can keep topping the reservoir up. Do this every two years.
.
The rear boxy rectangular tank is the special oil, I think it's the cs speed, I'll take a look when home
Please pm me to remind me to check at the weekend. It's certainly not standard auto oil as it has additives. For level on this one I use a head torch, held in the hand and tucked behind the tank, it illuminates the liquid level in ghost image, there is a moulded slot in the tank front marked 'max' . Note after standing a couple of days that it's higher than after you first turn the engine off. This is because there is a pressure accumulator which holds volume.
.
For the gearbox I want to know what oil, what quantity and how to refill it. I do know that the comfortmatic gearbox is the standard 150/ 180 mechanical box with Robbie the robot doing the actions.
@theoneandonly keep following....

Thanks for this
And the gear box you ask about can be done pretty easy on ours the m40
Pull out the black cap for the breather then under the gear box the drain plug 8mm square to drop the oil
Once drained clean copper washer or change if signs of leaks before hand and re screw
Then to the breather fit a tube and funnel and re fill with 2.9 litres of gear tech mtf 75w -85 patronas
It actually takes 2.85 but the rest is best for 5th or 6th gear smoothness
Watched a friend do his the reason I’m now on to mine is was like sludge

Any idea what size this square plug is ? The drain plug is 8mm but this is lots smaller
