my gas gauge says 1/2 full, but when I go to fill it up the station pump shuts down like the tank is full. Have been to 2 different stations. If I drive the car the gauge goes down. I put a clean hose 12 inches into the tank and it came back dry. Any clues? Thanks!

Hi, and welcome. We don't have a 500 but do have a Panda which is a very similar vehicle. My Mrs can't fill it without getting constant blow backs which once overflowed petrol (Gas) all down her front - she now refuses to fill it! I think a lot of the problem she has centres around the anti syphon flap. I put the nozzle in as far as I can get it and feed the fuel flow at about half the maximum delivery rate. When the nozzle triggers off I squeeze it once more until it triggers again and then put the cap back on. Gauge always shows full.

Thanks, I’ll give that try.

My Stilo doesn't like some pumps, particularly any Nervous Nancy (trigger goes off it there's a breeze, never mind any back-pressure) so to fill that I usually rotate the nozzle slightly (to around 60 degrees) which seems to help hold open any siphon flaps etc.

Also, are you pushing the nozzle in far enough? Last time I filled up the Younger Mrs S's 500, it was clicking off even after a second. If you tip the nozzle forwards a bit, it will probably go in further and solve the problem.

On both cars I can give the nozzle trigger the full beans. I tend to only back off when the tank is nearing full, since on some pumps in the past I've had fuel blow out (usually only when I'm wearing brand new trainers or something)..

American pumps can be slightly different to ours too? Been 12 years since being in the US and had to fill car

Now you mention it.. US cars seem to have more anti-pollution or anti-syphon (depending on whether you live in California or Detroit.. ) equipment on the filler neck. I think the nozzle probably just needs easing in a bit further and that should do it.
