Hello,

I'm considering buying a 2007 Punto. 1.3L Diesel engine with the 6sp DuaLogic transmission.

I have called the owner and they have purchased the car from an auction some 18months ago.

The car has no books / manuals, and only a service history from the last 18months. The car also has 1 key. No "code Card" either of course.

My questions are:

Is the 1 key going to be a problem when it comes time to get a 2nd cut? I understand that at some stage Fiat cars had a 'Master / Slave' key setup, is this the case with this car? Will it be a simple process to aquire a 2nd key?

I downloaded the user manual from the site already, and can't find any reference to if my car has a timing belt or a chain (1.3multiJet / 85hp).

Thanks,

Jason :)

Jason....welcome to the forum.
I am in the same position as you re the key.....do not go to the stealer...I got quoted £300 all in . Mind you worth trying them just in case they are more helpful. You will need two things done for a new key - the blade cut and the transponder programmed to the car's ECU. Getting a key cut is easy...getting the transponder done a wee bit more difficult. This depends where you are located in the country as far as I can see......don't laugh. There are guys around who can do everything for you for a reasonable price but you've gotta me near them as they need the car for the transponder piece.

Suggest process is.......
1. Buy brand new key with ALL internals off ebay.
2. Find someone close by who can cut key and programme transponder.

I used a guy in Nottingham. Sent a picture of the old key blade to him and via post sent a brand new blade and key fob. He cut the blade and then sent it back to me. I transferred the insides from the old key to the new one and it works brill. If I could have got the car to him he could have done the transponder piece as well. I have found that as I am in Aberdeen no-one nearby can do this.....and I think the closest person will be in Glasgow. I also got another key cut and this will open and close the doors but not start the car as it has no transponder chip in it but at least I have a spare key. This is the guy. Thank you for your reply.

It is a little difficult for me as I'm in Australia, and Fiat are not all that popular. We have a few dealers in Sydney and will give them a call to see how it goes.

So, the easy bit for me to do is buy the key, the hard bit will be the programming side of things. Is the process the same as other cars, ie can I use a person who is used to re-programming local cars to do my Fiat or is the process totally different and requires specialised tools / model knowledge.

Thank you!

Jason

Thank you for your reply.

The Handbook I have downloaded says nothing of its service life (the chain). Is it something that is not replaced under normal conditions?

Same with the Dualogic transmission, it isn't referenced anywhere. Is that a 'sealed for life' unit or it is a servicable unit?

Thanks again,

Jason

I don't know where some people get their prices from but a standard key is £108 and most garages charge you £60-70 for programming however you can haggle for a big discount on this. Key codes cost £15 to obtain if required.

As mentioned they have a timing chain but it's the tensioners that fail and normally give you plenty of notice of this due to the noise coming from the timing chain area. Chain and tensioner replacement is expensive at around £350.

The dualogic hydraulic unit is reliable and only a oil level check is required this is behind the metal guard at front of engine.

Programming can be carried put at a Alfa dealership as same equipment is used.

I got my quote directly from the Fiat stealership here in sunny Aberdeen. Think it's a bit of "got you by the goolies" as the Alfa dealer is same company.

I programmed a non-remote key yesterday, receipt stated £108 (non-remote key) this favours well compared to many 'other' manufacture prices.

From memory a remote key is around £180.
So your up to about £250 for a new remote key then, not exactly cheap! Don't know if its par for the course in the supermini class, but every other car I've owned came with two remote keys as standard.

What is cheap these days? your paying for a code 2 system key that cannot be bypassed therefore your car is safe (from this type of theft) therefore you have lower insurance premiums....can't have it all ways.

I agree I wouldn't buy a car with only one key (main reason simply being where is the other one then surprise surprise you car goes missing a few days later!) however I have in the past and negotiated the price with this in mind.
