I have read in desperation every thread on this site. My Yr 2000 2ltr JTD developed a missfire which of course got worse. It has been in 5 different garages now and currently langushes in a French garage where it has been for 3 months!!
It now missfires badly but only at low speed and normally in trafic (of course). It will then stop and fail to restart until it has cooled. Even then I may not have use of the throttle, it will start, run badly for a period regardless of throttle position, then kick in as usual. On the open road it is completely fine, I just dont know that its going to start again? The garage told me that they could not find anything wrong (on the computer) and that I would have to drive it until it stopped. Not an ideal situation, but I did this and checked every day for 3 days before sending (recovery) to the garage. You guessed it B-----y started when it got there!!! All said they are still no further forward. The language thing does not help (I mean French, not me swearing). So I face collecting it and DIY with the help and results of Forum. If you have any clues Plllleeeaase Help.
It has had the air control unit replaced and something to do with the revs (contoller)?. filters and lately, though I saw no sense in this- injectors.

Many Thanks'

Ounds like it could be your crank sensor. When it cuts out, do you have to wait untill it is almost cold again before it will restart?

A1ant,

Thats right, the longer I leave it the better chance it will start. You obviously know something about this. In days of old (CB Points) I was a mechanic, but reluctant now so I know a bit. Where is this and what would you advise please. I have not seen this on the numerous receipts. If I need to buy a part I am back in UK next week and could get it then. Parts are more expensive here than my garage is useless! Looks like its one for the reluctant Ex Mech.
many thanks for your help so far; near to desperate. Not true, we are desperate.

Regards,
Ted

a1ant,

I read every return on the forum and now remember that we too had a failed crank pully (fell apart). Started to fail after this time. Do you think this could be related?

a1ant,

Looked through some old receipts and see that I had an RPM sensor fitted some time back. This sounds like the crank sensor? Any point in going there again?

Thanks,
Ted
