Hello
Help please-i have the gearbox off for a clutch change, turns out the input shaft seal is leaking, i now have the seal, can anyone tell me how to replace the seal, ie step by step, its a 5speed box.
If no answers my next stop is a gearbox specialist, but i prefer to do myself.
Thanks in anticipation.
Walt

Have you taken out the old seal? If not it will show you how far the new one needs to go in, I'm not sure in they have a lip that they need to seat up against, get a drift (socket or similar) that is just a fraction smaller that the outer part of the seal and use this to GENTLY tap it home. This should push on the outer metal part of the seal not the inner "rubber" part. Make sure you offer the seal up squarely to the housing and tap lightly to make sure it goes in evenly all around.(y)

Thanks DiggerI'm more concerned about splitting the gearbox to access the seal, ie the step by step to splitting the box.

Walt

Hello Steve
Had to pay to get it done, cost 234 pounds to replace input shaft seal, i supplied seal, fair price really, with a quick turnaround, South west transmissions -Exeter.
I would still like to get hold of the step by step to split gearbox.
Thanks for reply.
Regards
Walt

Hi Walt
I removed diff assembly .dont know if i had to but it made moving box around easier .So thats the first step ,
1 Remove end cover
2 Remove large nuts on end of 5th gear and primary shaft (i used an impact gun )
3 remove 13mm bolts around box
4 remove reverse light switch
remove plate which retains rod detent springs and balls ( you will be able to remove springs ,but balls will fall into box when you split it ,just fish them out.
thats basically it .
next step is to strip out primary and secondary shafts .that is a bit more involved .
the primary (input shaft) has to be removed to get to seal .in all from strip down to rebuild around 3 hrs so i reckon the garage has done ok out of it but i guess they always do :)
i live nr bristol btw
