Hi guys, have read through all the other posts/threads along this problem and can't see any others with same issue.

Out of the blue last night my 2003 Ducato just started cutting out. It would not restart straight away, but after a few tries of the key it would come back to life. Each time it did so, it would run for perhaps another 10 minutes, then cut out again with only the engine management light coming on. Same again, try again a few times to start it, hey presto comes back to,life, goes again and 30 minutes later this time dies with no warning!

Every time it dies it is as though it has run out of diesel (no rough running or noises just plain old dies).

I left it over nit scratching my head, switched it on this morning and left it ticking over outside for 4 hours with no problem, took it for two 20 minute test drives, and nothing, not even a misfire!

Then went on a short journey a little while ago, and without warning it goes again!!! :bang:

Any ideas? I know it's a stab in the dark

You have the same van as me and ive been having cut out problems with mine, although i get 2 types. 1 where it sort of clicks and then EML comes on and dies, and the other which i have now fixed. the EML used to come on whilst driving and just die quietly, like you say like someone had turned the diesel off.

I had it plugged in, and i ended up changing the air mass sensor and it stopped cutting out quietly, just cuts out now when i accelerate hard.

Might not be but just sounds like your problem is similar to what i had.

Hi. Crank sensor fits the bill, pretty common on the jtd, gives random complete engine cut out.

EGR usually keeps running but with severe power loss and difficult starting.

Thanks for the replies, read yours mwooly and thought different issues because of the clicking, but thanks on the other info.

Cris a little further info for you, drove for around an hour tonight keeping the revs around the 2-3,000 mark and it was fine, does this help anymore ?

Hi. I had a crank sensor go on my jtd the cutting out was completely random it would run o.k. for maybe 200 miles in a day and the next day it would cut out 6 times in a 100 miles, This was a couple of years back the sensor was £40ish then at main dealer. The job is a little fiddly but not hard to do.

It’s below the starter at the back of the engine it has one wire and one 10mm bolt, if you do change it just make sure it is sitting squarely as you bolt it up.

Thanks again, I think I might go for both and try to get to the bottom of it!

Hi. Just to add to your choices is the fuel pump o.k.?

You really need to get the fault codes read otherwise you could throw money at it all day.

The next time it cuts out and refuses to start just turn the ignition on and you should be able to hear the pump clicking a few times if not it may be faulty.

Yes, fuel lift pump is 100% working, it can be heard priming for 20 seconds or so when the key is turned. I have had an issue with the IGN relay previously, so my first check was the said relay followed by the lift pump.

Just a tip, if you have removed any heat sheilding, it's best to replace it as the heat can affect the signal, I didn't have this problem with a fiat but rather a rover where the crankshaft sensor would cut out, this may save further problems in the future.
