1992 Panda Fiat 750 - How do I start it when it is COLD?

:bang: Cold weather problems. I just bought a 1992 Fiat Panda 750. I was told that it is really a pill when it comes to starting it in the cold. I cant get it started right now. How do I get it started and what is wrong with it? Thanks.

If it wont start with the choke pulled out then you have a problem, dampness, worn points, distributor cap, rotor arm, leads etc... it could go on. Give the car a full service and renew any ignition parts that look worn.

There are some Pandas that seem to be bad cold/damp starters, we had one once and never got to the bottom of the fault.

By the way... its normally better if you introduce yourself first on a forum when you are new... its polite and youll find you get more help too.

I just purchased a 1992 Fiat Panda 750 FIRE that doesnt like the cold weather. Once you get it started, she runs like a champ, starts up on one key stroke.

I am trying to find the actual name/part number of this temperature sensor that needs to be replaced and where to buy it from. Can anyone assist me with this?

My name is Phil -

I am new to the Forum world. My apologies for not introducing myself before asking for assistance. Thank you for all those who have already responded.

I live in Belgium and bought my '92 FIAT Panda 750 for a second means of transportation.

Again, I hope I didn't offend anyone by not introducing myself first. Until next time.......

Hi and welcome to the forum. Fraid I can't help with your cold starting problems, as mandapanda has an auto choke as she is a '94 model.

Hope you sort the starting problems soon.

:)

Hmmmmm........

I apologize for my ignorance, I am new to non-American cars and to Europe. I am still trying to locate or figure this sensor problem (so I am told) that regulates the how the car starts up when it is COLD!

Can this be a thermostat problem? Once the car is started it is fine until it sits all day or night in the cold weather. One quick key turn and off I go enjoying my Panda.

I really appreciate the kindness so far in this forum. But, if possible, I really could use some more assistance. Thanks in advance.

Phil

You havent given enough info, is your car a carb model or injection? I suspect being a 750 its carb, not come across a 750 injection yet. If its carb, there is no sensor, just a manual choke.... if its injection then I know nowt about them!
The thermostat will have nothing to do with starting either way.

Choke could be automatic in Panda 750 but I'm not sure
If you've got green ECOBOX which was popular in Pandas (fortunatelly not in UK) there could be problem as well...
You should to check carb (maybe choke doesn't work, broken wire)
if there is ecobox, check all pipes...
also could be electric problem...
It's difficult to help if you can't check car ... :(

All 750's had manual choke. Make sure it works. Take off the air filter from the carb, then someone must move the choke in and out and you check if something is moving in the carb.

PS. Did you have cars with carbs and manual chokes earlier? If you had only american cars earlier, possibly not ;-)

OK - It is a carb w/manual choke, not injection. I didn't think it could be the thermostat, but I had to ask.

There is a green ecobox. The choke seems to work pretty good. I will check all the pipes, what I am checking for? cracks, loose connections, etc....?

But, what I find the most unusual is that this only occurs when the car is cold (for example, sitting over night or outdoors in the cold weather). I just drove it to work and I can out there right now and it will start up with one quick key stroke. It took about 10 minutes this morning to get her started.

PS - This FIAT Forum and the folks here are great! I really appreciate all the help.

Phil

Look for blocked pipes. And, did you change leads?

I have never owned a manual choke car before. I am assuming that the chokes works because when it is started and you pull the choke out you can here the engine rev up and vice versa when you push it in. Can something still be wrong with the manual choke?

thanks you Sutjeska

Hi there Erv !
my cars have chokes , this is what i'd check;
replace the HT leads ,plugs, and points
is the battery good ?
when starting my cars i turn the key to the first point then just wait a minute or so - the choke still in .i keep my feet off the pedals , then turn the key -as the engine catches i pull the choke out ...
if i am still having problems then i just stop again for a minute or 2 then try again
good luck

I have exactly the same car as you.
I find it best to pull the choke out only half way.
Then press the gas just a little (about 10% of the way)
Then turn the key.

It wont start without any choke, and it wont start with full choke.
You can feel a kind of notch when you reach half way.

Your car uses a carburettor and has a manual choke but no electronics so there aren't any sensors.

If you still have trouble starting I would service the ignition system
(Replace sparkplugs, HT leads, King lead, Distibutor cap, and rotor arm and adjust the points gap.)
Best of luck:)

Manual choke should be "fully open" to start cold engine, but of course some Pandas like it's almost fully open.Check it as sutjeska said.
Maybe something wrong with ingition. Ingition could be strike baqck(if it's wright word)
