Technical 1981 Spider 2000 not starting. HELP!

Any suggestions on what might be wrong with a 1981 Spider 2000 that won't start? When I turn the key, the engine will turn over once or twice and then the starter kicks out of the motor and spins strong but doesn't turn the engine over. It sounds like if the starter could stay engaged for a few more turns of the motor, it would start. I've replace most of the distributor but no luck. Could the timing be off? Please help!
