Hi Chaps - I'm doing a 1400 turbo conversion to my x19. I bought a 1991 1400 uno turbo car from avanti that was on ebay two years ago for about £1400. It benefitted from a rebuilt engine, new rings, shells, bores rehommed etc and a new recon turbo from turbo active. It hadn't done any miles when I bought it so I did a bit of welding on the body to get it through the mot so I could gently run it in. Under their instructions I didn't use any boost untill 1000 miles had been done and then I changed the oil. There was a bleed valve fitted to the turbo but I kept it at standard boost. I took the engine out of the car a few weeks back and found an excessive amount oil in the exhaust downpipe. As avanti were rebuilding a gearbox for me (1300 turbo internals, x19 box) I showed them the turbo and they said it would need replacing. however there is no significant play in the shaft. Upon further inspection yesterday I noticed a significant amount of oil dripping out of the exhaust manifold. The car always smoked a bit on start up and when I put my foot down. Prior to taking it off the road it had started to miss a bit too. Since its rebuild it has covered 2500 miles approx. I was going to get the turbo overhauled but Im now wondering if I should be rebuilding the engine myself. Any thoughts?
