Just started experiencing a strange problem with my Multipla. it sometimes will not start up even though everything is showing as OK on the dash and the the car turns over fine.

This appears to intermittently happen if I have driven a short distance and parked up.

Earthing is OK,
Battery OK
Keycode recognised
Alarm/Immobiliser working as intended.

Complety stumped by this one as if I leave the car for a hour or so as if to cool down it will start first time then run fine for days.

I had a similar problem with my JTD a few months ago both in cold and warm weather and noticably when I switched it off after hot and it would not restart until I left it for a few minutes. Things improved greatly when I fitted a new fuel filter. I must say it did play up once or twice during the very cold winter but nothing since. I am not suggesting this will improve your situation but it certainly did with me.

hi
From reading other people's posts (while searching for answers to my own problem) it sounds like the crank sensor. They seem to fail hot and recover when they cool down.

For the first time ever with this car (1.9 JTD), today I had a problem exactly like Druidor's. I started from cold as normal and drove about 10 miles, parked for 15 minutes, then it wouldn't start. The thing spun over well, but showed no inclination to fire up at all. I spent some time mucking about with it, but no joy.

I called out the breakdown service who arrived in about half an hour. The guy stuck my key in the ignition, turned it and started the car! Switched off, then restarted. Switched off, then restarted. Then he gave me a very questioning look...

I then drove about 70 miles, stopped, then restarted with no bother at all. And it's been fine since.

Suggestions? Not ones which would involve the Fire Brigade though...

Thanks T - my first suspect I suppose is the crankshaft sensor.

It wasn't the AA who turned out, I'm with Carole Nash insurance and they have built in breakdown/recovery with their policies. Whether the breakdown guy had a reader with him I don't know, I was in a bit of a rush to get on and he was happy to let me go. But advised me to get it checked out... So I will.:)

crank sensors are cheap (£30 ish) and i'm sure you can get them at TMS, dingbro etc all localish to you. Fitting is bit trickier and best on a ramp.

I'd change it as matter of course with timing belt or every 5 years as this seems to be when the sensor starts to 'break down' internally.

definitely 100% the crank sensor.

they dont always show a code either, so everything will look normal engine ecu code wise.

all the jtd's suffer from it, ive just done mine it was 22GBP +Vat from Fiat.

Seems to have been the crank sensor. Fitted a new one and the problem -so far - hasn't recurred. (Nearly three weeks now).

Shouldn't have tempted fate by saying that...:)
