Here is the problem: when starting marea with 1.9jtd engine, it starts, and after 1 sec, there is a kind of grinding noise which lasts for 3 seconds, and then everything is fine. At first I suspected it could be something like oil is 'being late' to some part of the engine, but I can repeat this (start , grind, stop, start, grind, stop) a few times. It does not grind when it is started after even a very short ride. Tried to get someone to start it, while I was listening with bonnet open, but could not locate the 'grinding' source. Maybe some belt is slipping?

It sounds to me like the starter motor is on its way out. Seems to be sticking at startup hence the grinding noise.

You could try starting the car and during the grinding noise turn the key again to see if its the same sound. It wont do the starter any good though.

Thanks.

That crossed my mind, but since I didn't ever do that on this car (did so on previous wv car and the sound was much louder, as I recall), I guessed it wasn't the cause, but I will try to do that tomorrow. Hope it won't ruin the possibly failing starter completely :)

While inspecting for the sound, I noticed that (alternator and pump) belt developed a kind of cracks which could be visible on the part which stops on the pulley (belt is bent, so cracks are visible). Is this odd for a 30.000km (19.000 miles) old belt?
