my scudo van has developed a noise, i was traveling at about 60mph and when i came off the throttle and then back on there was a loud `cackling` noise as if a pipe had come loose, i pulled over to check but found nothing amiss. i turned off the ignition and started it again and all was fine, this has happened a couple of times. could it be the egr valve sticking open or is there anything else it could be?

If the 'cackling' noise sounds like a loud old transit / taxi engine noise then it is more likely your timing solenoid. The noise you are hearing is a piston slap.

I had the same problem where it would come and go until eventually it stayed.

It's a relatively cheap fix, £80.00 a couple of years ago, if I remember correctly.

Hi there, i seem to get this sort of noise from time to time on my 1.9D el too. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it as some times i get it at start up and other times whilst driving. The sound is just like an old rattly taxi and i do notice a lack of power if it happens when i'm driving.
Is this piston slap then?? and what causes it?? (is it a momentary lack of fuel being delivered to the cylinder??)

Also will this cause damage to the engine or is it simply a minor annoyance??
Many thanks in advance to whoever can answer the above questions for me and potentially put my mind at rest.

It happened with me intermittently, at first, no pattern, and sounded like a loud taxi.

It's almost sounded like a silencer of some sort was loose.

There was also a lack of power too, when the noise appeared.

That is definitely the timing solenoid (as I call it, might not be the right name).

Basically, the Scudo has electronic timing. It's this unit that controls the timing that is faulty.

The best way to check is when you turn on your ignition until the red light comes on the dash. A crackling sound should be heard, for a couple of seconds, from the engine.

It is a relatively quick fix for a garage.

I'm not sure if the piston slapping actually damages the engine, probably a good idea to get it fixed ASAP.

Tell the garage it's deffo the unit that controls the electronic timing (timing solenoid??)

Good Luck

Any update superscudo?

Hi there guys, time for a quick update. After reading the info that Bossman sent reference the timing solenoid, i decided not to take any further action at the time as the issue didn't seem to get any worse or more regular (nor any less regular for that matter) Had an issue today where the van has stopped and won't restart for any length of time. The symptoms were a cough/splutter/lack of power which started intermittently followed by a complete loss of power and eventually the engine stalled. The engine will now start but only tickover for a short period of time chuffing out white smoke while it does so before stalling. Any attempt to rev it results in a stall. Will go across to where she's parked up a little later to do the "clicking solenoid" check. Wish me luck eh.....

O.K. Been to the van tonight and listened for the aforementioned "clicking" sound when the ignition is first switched on. I've definately got the clicking, so i guess this counts out the timing solenoid??? Would you guys agree??
Prior to coming home tonight and reading the forum for clues to my problem i thought to myself that the fuel injection pump would be the issue. I based this assumption on the loss of power and white/grey smoke that was being emitted from the exhaust, Do you guys think i'm sniffing in the right direction or have any idea's as to what the problem may be?? Any help/suggestions would be greatfully recieved. Many thanks, Superscudo.
