There are loads of possibilities, from Air Filter to Head Gasket issues, best bet is to get your local Fiat dealership to run a diagnostic including engine compression to locate the source.

My bet would be the Air Filter is dirty, I just changed my 03 1.6 and there is a noticeable difference in how it turns over.

Tell me do u get any abnormal noise when you try to start ?

I also believe the "quality" of the engine oil can make a difference too, when was the last oil change performed ?

I have a 97 barchetta and now i get that diesel sound not only when i start it... and after i drive it with 20km/h (f***ed traffic) and the engine gets hot. could be the variator? the engine becomes noisy... i loose power, the oil and stuff are new... could be the 5w40 castrol magnatek to make this problems? it's too soft at high engine temp?

change the variator when changing the cam belt - same work
