I have had enough of being given the run around with this problem I have on my engine..
with the only real way of finding out the cause to strip down the engine, I have decided that I would be better off throwing my money at a replacement engine..
Because odds on if I start stripping it down, I will end up replaceing at least the big ends and having a crank re-grind..then if I'm doing that I just as well re-ring the pistons and obviously skim the head etc etc..
so if anyone has or knows for a good 1.8 engine please let me know..

I think you should sell it and get a new car, you will never be happy. You bought a 7 year old car for £800 and then moan that its noisy. Did you not road test it first?

Old engines rattle, its a fact of life.

Make a recording of it and post it here so we can all listen.

sorry to be blunt but I'm pissed off with your..theres nothing wrong with it attitude.if thats the case why do you keep on posting on my questions...

Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 Engine Required

Daz, there is no helping some people, let him spend £1000's having it re-con'd and discover it still rattles.

Anglo, I've taken apart more engines than most of the other members on this forum. Engines wear, old engines rattle. If it was my car and I was worried about it I'd take the sump off, plastiguage the big ends and mains, check if any of them are particularly worn and at the same time you can manually move the pistons to check for bore wear. If you have a cracked ring it will show as a scored bore.

As you said yourself, the cams are in good shape which indicates the oil system is healthy and has been kept filled with the right oil. Cam lobes are always the first to go if there is any sign of oil problems.

Broken rings are amazingly unusual, I broke a ring on my imp cos I thought the bores were good enough (only had 20k on the clock) but they wern't and the step snapped the ring on the very first run. A friend broke a ring on his highly tuned rally car as he was totally thrashing it.

Taking the head off, even if you have it skimmed perfectly still puts you at much greater risk of gasket failure and oil problems. Modern engines to not like being taken to bits. A collegue's Audi has been back to the garage about every 5k miles as they cannot get the head gasket to seal properly. Its even had a new head and the block has been skimmed. That car is less than 3 years old.

My 1.6 makes a rather nasty ticking noise on really cold mornings but its over 6 years old and has 75k on the clock. My sisters uno has had a big end rattle for the last 2 years and now the gearbox sounds a bit rough but its 11 years old. You can hear the hydraulic cam chain tensioner on my mums 12 year old Saab taking up the slack when it starts but 110k miles is good going.

None of this is beacause they have been badly looked after, I do all my own servicing and have yet to have a car fail an MOT. (and no, I do not bribe the MOT tester)
All I'm trying to do is save you an AWFUL lot of money. You have an old car which will probably need new lower suspension arms at £100 each, wheel bearings at £40 each, the gearbox is probably well worn too and thats ££££ to fix, rear bushes, shocks, brakes, you name it.

And there is no guarantee that a) it will solve the rattle and b) you won't be in for a whole host of problems a few 1000 miles down the road.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 1.8 Engine Required

Appologises To Tom!!

Tom,

I appologise for my earlier comments I was out of order...
I realise that you were trying to help save me time and money, I was just frustrated with this problem...and trying to describe it without someone actually hearing it is very difficult..
It isn't just a case of a worn engine, if it was that I would accept it, but the car is seriouly under powered and the rattle is limited to one cylinder only..
So rather than waste time and money stripping down the engine, I would sooner put a complete lump in it..I have located several engines c/w with manifolds etc for around £400 with mileage of between 26k-50k..
As I previously mentioned the car only cost £800 and has been well maintained, despite this engine problem,it has only had two owners with the first one owning it for most of its life, and the service history goes up to 72K..
I also run a 2000 (W) 1.6 Trofeo Brava, and as you can imagine have been comparing the two performance and engine wise...I am aware that the 1.8 is a harsher run engine but this engine is not the norm..
With regards try before you buy..It was an ebay auction buy, and when I went to collect it the clutch was slipping big time...so the seller agreed to fit a new clutch and deliver it down to me...and since this rattle is mainly when the engine is under load I never picked up on it until the car was delivered with a new clutch, which incidently cost her over £250...so all in all I don't think I've down that bad on the deal even if it is gonna cost me £400-£500 on top, after all these cars are still fetching around £1500 + in nice condition..
So let me finish by once again appologise for my attitude, and assure you that it won't happen again, and hope that this won't deter you from trying to help me in the future..

Cheers Anglowelsh
