1.6 problem

I have had the car for a few months now and there is a problem that is bugging me. It is a 1.6sx 2000 and it makes a whine that increases with the revs. One person told me that it was the alternator bearings and another electrical mechanic said there was no chance of it being the alternator as the one in the 1.6 is so robust. He thought it was the power steering pump as when the wheels were turned the noise lowered, but if I turn on the fans the noise lowers in tone aswell. I do need to get it checked out but thought I would ask on here first.

It is quite a loud noise and I have heard a couple of bravo/as go past with the same noise. Just wondered if anybody else had it.

does it sound like a whistling? and the faster you go in said gear gets louder? my brava was like this all the time i owned it and never caused me a problem! i had my brava 3 yrs
