Technical 1.4 vs hgt

Ordinary, common, car scrappage scheme candidate

vs

Rare, and getting rarer, classic Fiat Hot Hatch.
Every HGT part was so different from the bravo that Haynes doesn't cover it. Not at all. Alfa bits Lancia bits etc.

Unless you mean the new 1.4 then MPG.
Even if you mean the old 1.4, then MPG.
Very bad MPG

i mean the classic bravo.

i need to choose between:

Bravo 1.4sx 96 lhd
&
Bravo 2.0HGT 96lhd.

Which one to choose ( aiming for a reliable Engine)

If you find a HGT take that, it will not depreciate into rust/crushing. Keep the HGT's alive

Both cars should be reliable if you know how to check a second hand car, but the HGT will have all the toys, air-con, heated seats, sat-nav, ejector seats etc.

Never go for a newer lower variant when the same money gets you the top variant for the same money. Same goes for modern cars. Assuming you can cover the insurance difference.

If you're lucky most the toys should still work.

alright, nice :)

unfortunatly, this HGT is without aircon:/ but dosen't realy matter for me, it just needs a little work around the edges, some rust and minor things, like central locking not working on passenger door, and window contact on drivers side. :)

For starters it has 60hp difference, and much nicer engine note, and more rare than the 1.4's...plus the 1.4's are terrible at mpg. You'd be much better off in the hgt, plus most parts are a direct swap with the fiat coupe, engine wise, makes more sense.

i have never thought of the 2.0 hgt sharing engine parts with coupe.
It's gonna be a bit of a project, when i get it, needs some rust repairs, and the minor defects:)

Well it shares the same two 5 cylinder engines the 147bhp & 155..so if you can't find parts from a hgt look towards a coupe or even the fiat marea. Parts are out if needed, so its a good thing fiat spread the engine across 3 different models..but as it happens the 3 models are getting rarer and rarer than ever.

If you can afford the HGT get it I say, The performance difference is going to be day and night. Plus the great sound of the 5 cylinder HGT engine its a real all time classic.

Lots of people say the 1.4 12valve engine was the worst engine fiat ever made, it has an awkward single point injection system wich doesnt give the car all the benifits an electronicaly injected system should have. The 1.4 is designed to be low cost, the 2.0 is designed to be awesome. We have very few people talking about problems with the HGT.

the engine in this hgt, has run 280 000 km tho( aprox 172 000 miles)

how long a drowen distance can the 2.0 20v survive ?

fiat has been given alot of stick over the years with reliability, but the 5 cylinder has to be one of the most reliable engines fiat ever built, taking into account that you buy the best oil, service more regular than usual, always get the belts done a little early, always treat the engine right, these engines never have head gasket problems as a major. you cant go wrong with them.

so they should last for aslong as you treat it right.

nice to know :)
- have sorted the elecric window problem, was a faulty switch. have also fitted Marea poly's, gonna work on central locking today and some other things.

I cant believe their still trying to sell the lower range 96' bravo's.

172,000 is pushing any 155HGT, big petrol mileage, depends how its been treated.

Better make sure the cambelt's been done every 60k, religiously, engine out, all the D'd wheels and pulleys changed, everything they might aswell get changed at the same time as the engine's out.

Same at 120k 180k etc, shouldn't really be any problem, the 20v155 isn't supposed to be a bravo engine, hence the appalling turning circle.

the 155 20v engine doesnt need to be removed to have its belts chandged, lots of specialists will do it now ithout removing the engine, and my old Marea 155 20v had 235.000 miles and she still pulled strong (y)
and it was ragged on 3 track days and every sunday
