Anyone here from Ireland that would give me an idea on how much it costs to change the timing belt and anything else that needs to be done at the same time?

The Bravo I bought recently has done 84k miles and the original Fiat belt is not on it, but not sure when the belt in it was done??

Ah the timing belt :)

Last kit I got myself was from a Fiat dealership in Newry, £60 all in. That included a tensioner and belt.

Down here expect to pay around €80 for a Gates kit (same bits included)

Change the water pump too: About €45 for a First Line pump, much cheaper than a new engine.

You'll need the 2 aux belts too, power steering and alternator belts, as if you try refit the old ones they will snap after a few hundred miles. Another €15 tops.

These engines require specialist tools to time (timed on downstroke of tdc on piston 1) lock the cams, hold the cam sprocket (to loosen) and tension the tensioner.

We once got a garage to do a belt for our old Bravo (before we got the tools) it was in the region of about €250 iirc.

They're really easy to do regardless (y)

Wow that was quick :)

Thanks for that Mal.
If my car was passing up your way would you enjoy working on a " Normal " Bravo :worship: :D

I think my record stands at 30 mins for a belt and tensioner change while still in the car :D

You can get those tools to rent :) I don't know of anyone in the south that offers that service though :(

richydraper wrote a guide in the Stilo guides for a belt change. Essentially the same engine (different alternator housing and ignition system but the timing belt is the same) (y)

Ok thanks for that.

There are tipp ex marks in the engine bay already, can it be changed without the tools?

It can be but I wouldn't recommend it. At the very least the cams need locking... Ideally the piston tools aswell to see if the pistons line up (see below)

The little weight has to line up with the cutout to tension properly. This one wasn't done right

The sprocket holder in action. It holds the sprocket and allows you to loosen it with minimal pressure to the cams. This is to fit the belt on easy

Here is why you shouldn't reuse the aux belts:

Thanks, it would be so nice for someone who knows the car inside out to do a proper job on my Bravo as I would like to keep it going for another few years.

The main thing to keep on top of is the coolant, keep it changed for the blue Paraflu every 2 years. Nothing major goes wrong with these engines once that's kept on top of (y)

what should all be replaced with a bravo 1.2 trofeo
belt waterpump .....
