I've owned both 1.4 12V and 1.2 16V Versions of the Bravo.

Comparison:

1.4 12V = 18mpg
1.2 16V = 42mpg
---------------
1.4 12V = 70BHP
1.2 16V = 82BHP
---------------
1.4 12V = 0-60 / 13.8
1.2 16V = 0-60 / 11.8
---------------
1.4 12V Engine has an issue with cambelts. Not to mention fuel consumption.
1.2 16V Has is a pretty sturdy engine, same as all 1.2 Fiats. Pretty reliable.

My 1.2 is pushing 100BHP and 0-60 in about 10.5s, so they can be tuned a bit, however the 1.4 is more tuneable.

Tom knows some guy who has a 1.4 that is nearly as fast as his 1.6 16V, however he still has the dreaded MPG figure and that cambelt polarva.

I'd choose the 1.2 over the 1.4 anyday, and so would anyone else here on the forum.

(Plus the fact that it's gonna be newer anyway)

Get a 1.2.

Ian.

>1.4 12V Engine has an issue with cambelts.

Nope. That was the 1.4 punto which was a different engine.

Maybe you're thinking of the cam oil spray bar.

1.2 for definate. More powerful and more economical. And the ECU cant be remapped.

Fiat scrapped the 1.4 and replaced it with the 1.2 for a reason. The 1.4 was **** poor compared to the others.

I didn't know that Fiat put 1.4 engines in their Punto's.

Except for the Mk3's where they've got the new 1.4 16V Punto's.

18 mpg for a 1.4? No way

I get 30 just driving around town normally, I'm sure I could get more if I was even more conservative.

Still though, there is no contest between them 1.2 better than the 1.4 in nearly every way :( .

Still, I am happy with my 1.4 no real problems so far :) .

Tom,

Whos the guy with a 1.4 thats as fast as a 1.6 ????
What has he done to the thing ?

You are right about the oil spray bar, what a cr*ppy design !

He sold it about 2 years ago, worked for the halfords near my last company.

The spray bar works well, they just grossly underestimated the amount of oil gunk :)

There have been a lot of cambelt failures on the 1.4, more than all the other engines put together. Even my 1.4 failed at 4 years old and 29,000 on the clock (3,000 miles after I sold it)

I managed 22mpg from mine, but it was a joy to drive and lead to me buying the HGT155.

I have driven many 1.2's and they are rev happy little chappies, but you have to keep them singing or they get bogged down. The 1.4 seemed to be more drivable, but it was let down by consumption, emissisons and reliability so was dropped.

Its better suited to the 5 speed in the Bravo/a than it is to the 6 speed in the Punto though IMO.

1.2 16v then for me!

Enjoying the 1.2 in my brava, got an average of 42.5 from it and as a guide line, its comparable to the tempra 1.6 (carb) that my perents had a few years back, for bhp and performance. Although its torque range was lower at 3000 but otherwise fairly similer

02 Stilo Dynamic 1.6 - Sky Blue
01 Brava 80SX - Ink Black

Tom.. I know.

Don't forget though, I'm 19 now, and a year ago I knew absolutely naff all about engines.

The V5 engine just didn't make sense, how can you have 3 cylinders on one side and 2 on the other? I realise now how it's done. VW are clever :)

Should of realised that though before I started blabbing off :)

Nevermind hey.

Tom, I do quote though

"There have been a lot of cambelt failures on the 1.4, more than all the other engines put together"

That's good enough to say they've got cambelt problems I reckon. :)

and Ian, the mk3 puntos haven't come out yet mate ;)
the new ones out at present are facelifted mk2 or as some people call them mk2.5's ;)
New punto which comes out early 2006 I think is a joint venture with GM and will be vert similar to the new corsa thats coming out. there are getting vauxhalls 1.6 low pressure turbo engine in exchange for fiats multijet diesel engines. If I rememeber rightly :)
