Ok I have agreed to change the cylinder head Gasket on my mates 1.2 16v punto. I have done this a few times on the 8v engines but never on one with the 16v head and am very aware of the fact that you are ment to use the correct cam locking tools that i do not have access to. My plan was to make lots of tipex marks and not loosen of the bolts at the ends of the cam shafts. But I cant decide as some people say its fine to do this and others say its a big no no and you must use the locking tools. My last option is to follow the guide in the holly Haynes bible and get my mate to machine some lock keys up as he works for an engineering company. Does any one have any exspierience either re-timeing or changeing cam belts on this engine thanks in advance.

the locking tools will only be a few quid from ebay or a motor factors mate, iirc they are a tenner for the 2 for the v6 vectra, apart from that its relativly the same as an 8v, just turn the engine by hand a good few times to make sure all te marks line up, and if you are still not sure, turn it a few more times by hand till you are 100%.

but its a caker bud, good luck

Ye i had a look on e-bay the chepest i found the locking kit was 55 quid. I think will just use the goog old tipex method. Its served me well in the past.
