I have had my Bug for 5 years now and it has 107k on the clock and for the first 3 it was a dog! Spent probably nearly £3000 fixing it over the years on countless problems. But, having a large family (4 kids, all wanting to sit in the front!) we have stuck with it because we cannot afford a Honda FRV yet and we really like it! :D

But the last 18 months it has been good, apart from a few annoying little problems.

Now a new problem has arisen.

About 4 weeks ago I was pulling away at a roundabout in 1st gear and the engine stalled like I had put it in 5th gear and not 1st. Tried again in case I had been a muppet, same again, then again. On the 4th attempt the it pulled away fine, with a big puff of black smoke.

All was well after that until about 9 days ago, while driving round the M25 I noticed that when I put my foot down it seemed to take a few seconds to take power. Got off the M25 at Waltham Abbey, went to pull away at the roundabout, and, the same thing happened again. This time it would not go! Called Green Flag, an hours wait...... then after about 25 minutes called my mechanic :worship: to see if he could fit me in. He asked me to start it and rev it hard. Big puff of black smoke, and pulled away!

Got towed home as I did not want to break down again. Took it to my man on the Monday, he checked it out, took it for about a 40 mile round trip, nothing, nowt, no problem at all. The only fault his diagnostic machine was an air flow sensor code that he cleared. He did the same trip the following day, and again nothing went wrong.

Picked it up from him on Wednesday, and it has been fine. Today the "leader of the opposition" went out in it, Same problem!!!!! Left it 25 minutes it worked......OMG!:bang:

The last major fault 18 months ago, was the crank shaft sensor, but this is different to that.

Does anyone have any ideas please? We are getting married on Saturday and would kind of like a car that is it working!!! Thanks

i would try disconnecting your airflow meter first.

drive it and see if that makes a difference. if not it could be your egr valve sticking.

I'd shoot for EGR as well. Mind you, my main dealer said that when EGR goes, Air Flow whasit almost certainly ges faulty at the same time.Sure enough after EGR change it came back much better but still slightly hesitant. Changed air flow whatsit thing and baboom, she flies.

He wasn't trying to diddle me either - this was all done under warranty.

The lads have cracked it for you anyway. It'll definitely be one of those two things.(y)

Thanks for the replies people.

Took her in to my man today so he can have a look at the EGR & air flow dooberry. And sods law, for the 20 minute drive there, had no problems at all!

I trust him to tell me what he finds and thankfully he is really good and will only replace when necessary.

Keeping my fingers crossed that he can sort it out by tomorrow, if not, will be getting lifts for the next couple of days!

Thanks again and will report back my findings.

hi can any one help ive got a 19jtd multipla the problem is the injector light keeps comein on when driveing then best part of the time it will not rev up unless you take it out of gear it feels like sume thing holding it back ive changed maf sencor ive cleaned egr can any one help please

Have a look above the passenger-side footwell and you will see a white connector. This is the throttle cable extension and often becomes intermittant giving the symptoms you describe. Seperate and clean and refit. Some folk have actually cut out the connector and hard wired by soldering the connections.

Just got back from honeymoon! Called my man this morning and he has checked for the things you all mentioned and can see no fault on any of them. He has had it for a week now and has driven it at least once a day, and the bloody car has not skipped a beat:cry: :bang:. He said it could be the EGR, but in his opinion it is more likely to be the air flow sensor. But he is reluctant to change to change either as they are about £200 each, and with no proof of either being faulty, does not want me to waste my money.

So, going to go back to pick it up this morning and he is going to show me how to disconnect the airflow meter in case it happens again, and if it works after we know it is that!
Thanks again for the suggestions, if anyone has any new ones, I am all ears!

next time it does it disconnect your flow meter (after turning off your engine).

get your egr blocked off anyway, even if you fit a new one it still only feeds the engine its own pooh. youll find itll be alot more responsive with it blocked off and youll never have another moments trouble from it. itll cost you a sheet of 1mm welding metal and half an hours labour at the most.

you can buy airflow meters for these for about 35 quid off ebay, the one i used was theairflowmetercompany, it worked fine but doesnt come in the casing, its just the measurement probe. some say you should never remove the probe from its cylinder but i have and the flow meter i fitted from the above company worked fine.
