And now lets see if I can help the new stilo owner (y) The diesel noise I'm sorry to say sounds like the variator and is expensive to fix. The exhaust blow quite often is on the flexy section and unless you can get it welded will mean a posible replacment section and the 4th gear sounds as if you may have selector fork problems on that gear but this wont be confirmed without a strip down Hope that helps somewhat (y) Welcome to the stilo masive mate :slayer:

Hello Iain - my Stilo, a 1.6, has done a similar thing for a long time. Its out of warranty now and no ones every been able to find a fault with it. Often (but not always) I get a gruff boomy sound from the front area of the car, but not as far forward as the engine - which tallys up with the flexi-hose area of the exhaust people talk about. I've had the exhaust checked several times and everyone says there is nothing wrong. It only does it when the car is on the move with the engine doing work, the most of the noise is when im accelerating. If i rev the engine in neutral, there is no boom. Is this a similar case to yours where it disappears when the car is stationary?

Thanks,
Derek

I have the exact same on the 1.2 and my flexi has been replaced- it sounds a lot further forward than the flexi

posted about it here

Thanks - would it in theory be possible for me to have a problem with the flexihose that results in this boomy gruff noise, but in differing amounts?

It might sound a silly idea, but this boominess amount differs from trip to trip - could the 'shake' of the engine and everything attached push or pull slightly on the flexi, altering the size of a possible hole. or am I being silly? My noise really sounds like an exhaust noise and I've had the cars sensors and everything checked over and over with no faults found and no error codes in over 3 years, so I don't think its an engine/sensor problem. Its done it for most of its life, so maybe a manufactured problem?

Could I ask one final thing - did the journeys where your noise was there give you an under-par ride, with the car feeling sluggish? Accelerating when it is like this makes it sound like I have no silencer!

Thanks,
Derek
