Hello all - I wonder if anyone can help with this one - or at least has experience of it.

I've got an 02 Stilo 1.6 Dynamic with the standard cassette audio system; when using the radio after about 15 mins of driving from cold the system starts cutting the audio to the speakers, cranking up the volume to 17+ gives a barely audible sound with a lot of crackling; also when this happenes the RDS loses the name of the radio channel.

I know it isnt the speakers or AMP because when I use a discman and a tape adapter the sound is fine, regardless of the length of the journey.

Anyone got any ideas?

it's not the option on the radio to alter the volume to match the speed of the car is it?, I remeber when i had the standard headunit in it used to do somthing like that?

No - the audio cuts out totally - then makes crackling and bass boom kind of noises when you turn the volume up - it sounds very broken; i'm just puzzled as the take deck works fine, and the auto vol function is fine using that too..

It sounds like a duff component or dry joint in the radio section of the circuit. The internal temperature of the unit is probably reaching the critical point after about 15mins where the joint or component goes faulty. Presumably once it cools down again it will work normally.

My Kenwood (none standard) does this whether using CD or Radio, usually in summer and when its on loud. Never did it in My old car (Seat Ibiza) but I think it just overheats in the Stilo. Kenwood just turns itself off for 20 minutes. Then its ok (unless its cranked up again and then after 5 minutes-da da, same result)

See your Fiat dealer as my Stilo cassette unit didnt do this at all. However mine did have a good ol' munch at my Stone Roses tape, little bastard- hence my old kenwood cd HU back in the car
