I have 2002 Stilo Abarth which is stuck in 2nd gear, sometimes you can get it to go into netural but it is mostly stuck in 2nd there is fluid in the selespeed container and the pump does prime.

I have plugged a computer onto it today and it has come up with two errors firstly it came up with error code P1760 Brake Switch Sensor and error code P1742 Selection Sensor Circuit does anybody have any idea as to what the problem is? Thanks

Sounds like it could be a combination if two issues. The common brake switch problem which is located behind the brake pedal more than likely just needs adjusting and a possible sensor fault in the Selespeed gearbox which will need replacing.
 
I got the car checked again by my friend who plugged his machine in and he said that everything seemed to be fine apart from the rpm reading which wasnt so he reckons it is the clutch speed sensor.

I hope it is just that as when the first computer was plugged in it came back with the fault code p1742 which is selection sensor circuit and p1760 which was the brake circuit switch has anyone come across the fault p1742.
 
I have changed all the sensors on the gearbox and I have changed the actuator but I sil have the me problem of the ar being stuck in gear anybody got any clue to what the problem is? The pump is priming fine.
 
Found this on alfaowner.com relating to P1742:

"this fault code relates to the sensor on the rear of the accumalator, if you get a code of p1741/p1742/p1743 it is down the the three sensors. By uplugging each individual sensor it will throw different faults and then you can establish each sensor working or not working."
 
Different gearbox but same problem

I have a Stilo Abarth with the selespeed gearbox and basically the gearbox was messing around and was stuck in 3rd gear but with no drive. I have changed the gearbox and the actuator but now the car will only let me select netural or reverse, but it still wont drive even when it is in reverse and I have gearbox faliure and parking sensor faliure.

Anybody got a clue to what the problem could be?

Is it your original box that's stuck in 3rd gear? You said before that it was stuck in 2nd. :confused:

It is the original box that was stuck in 3rd gear, but this new gearbox that I have bought will only select netural or reverse, the box should be ok as it has come off a working car and has a 90 day guarantee.
