re: JTD K&N box filter

I have had K&N "in airbox" air filters in all my cars / bikes, even 20 years in cape town, you can feel the difference, economywise as well, and the service limit is, as my experience stands, 18 to 24 months a wash with their service kit, depending on mileage or dusty conditions, they are worth it, if you are willing to wash it yourself.
your choice really.

re: JTD K&N box filter

yes, sorry k+n recommend 50,000 miles before clean and re oil,but i wont be waiting till that the same as i wont leave my oil in 18,000 miles or leave my cam belt 5 years or 72,000 miles theres manufacturers recomended and theres owners recommended.maybe 10,000 then.
extreme i know but have a look at this then see if you wanna wait 50,000 miles

I agree with sussexa, I forgot to mention I do typically 10.000 to 13.000 miles per year, cleaning the K&N at around 12.000 or before winter starts, my filter is as old as the car (04) and will prob. last another 5 years still, BUT only use their cleaning kit and don,t over oil it and you will be fine, enjoy !!

Hah, vauxhall drivers!!!

I cant see how it got that dirty so quick unless he has it right under the car scraping soil off the floor!

there is no way a car driven reasonibly would collect that much soil inside the filter.

Especially if its fitted in the factory air box ;)

re: JTD K&N box filter

It's very difficult but is a little easier if you first place the filter in the cover (instead of ON the box).

I can tell you it's really easy if you remove the MAF and the moulding that connects to the turbo - but then that's even more work :(

re: JTD K&N box filter

right.... how do i do that? :)
Remove the MAF assembly?

You really need to consult eLearn (technical CD often sold on eBay) or go searching many of the JTD MAF threads. As said it's a lot of work and you'll need to buy large jubilee clips to do it properly.

Quite honestly, it doesn't make sense to go that path unless you intended stripping that part of the induction anyway (maybe for a good clean etc)

re: JTD K&N box filter

i had to go down route of removing maf housing when i did filter change, even with that off lid didn't open far enough to make it easy but was easier, if i remember theres a hose running underneath that stops the filter going in easy think i had to squash up my paper filter to get it in.
next time its out for a clean i have contact cleaner here ready for maf.

re: JTD K&N box filter

Well the maff thing is held on to the box with 2 10mm nuts, remove them then pull maff out then you should be able to get your filter in better i would have thought.
The smaller pipe that goes into the oil trap on the bottom does pull out but is a bit of a sod to push back in though.

re: JTD K&N box filter

On a JTD I'd remove the circlip that holds the hose on the fenderside and replace it later with a proper hoseclamp. If you remove the hose the box opens just enough to replace the filter.

sorry, whats the fender side? do you mean the other side, i.e the opposite side to where the maf is?

also, i've searched for ages but how do you remove the MAF seonsor, like unplug the wire bit?

re: JTD K&N box filter

Stuart,

Yes there is a hose that points towards the fender and up IIRC (Sorry it's 3 years ago since i sold my chipped JTD MW). It is held by a circlip to the filterhousing.
Since I find it impossible to deal with these circlips I replaced this one with a normal clamp. Just release the clamp. Pull the hose. Open the filterhousing for about 5-6 cm and change the filter.
Yes the MAF points to the engine so it's on the other side.

re: JTD K&N box filter

good weather today doing mine now,the rubber pipe that connects to the vapour trap box under the air box did pull off easily with clip off(not to sure if it will clip back on yet)and made it a lot easier to get filter out, although i had already removed maf sensor housing to clean with electrical contact cleaner.maf housing on mine has plastic screens on inlet and outlet and a wire screen also making it difficult to spray onto the maf sensor, don't think i'll bother with that again.
got a fair bit of debris out of k+n only been in less than 6,000 miles.
found my green filter cleaner and oil and there recomendation is 6,000 miles or 6 months to clean and re oil !
will post pics later tonight when finished.
