Its that simple :) After a month with my Panda 100HP (hope she rests in peace :() I was starting to consider buying a used Stilo since the prices are so low. To be more precise, a 140HP M-jet...

Now, I know FIATs modern diesels are good (or so I heard) and 140 HP can probably feel nippy even in a car that weights 300kgs more than a Panda but would like to know how the car drives, how it handles, how much fun is it realy? Would love to hear it from the mouth of someone that used to drive both cars! How does the torque compensate with having a bigger car?

Momentarily Im still considering the Panda over it - but who knows, I might get tempted. Panda would cost me around 13K EUR new with the gear I planned. I can get the Stilo for 10K EUR with a bit over 25, 30 K km. Besides, Stilo would probably drink less but hows with the running costs beside the gas?

If I had to specify what I love about the car the most it would be:

- drive feeling (fun to drive)
- practical value
- low(er) running costs
- reliability
- power
- looks
- sound

Should I stick with the Panda?

Thanx to every feedback on this....

buying a mj stilo compared to a panda :)

i would say it may initially loose the instant nippy-ness that the panda 100 would have. such as say, setting off from a start the stilo wont go until about 20mph.

it would maybe be a bit more refined and relaxed at cruising though.

round bends it might have a bit more body roll then the panda, but thats stilo for you.

i still find it has plenty of grip.

you might get a bit better mpg as well :D

Oi you ..get back to the panda section were you belong or I'll put you over my knee ;) after owning a stilo I can tell you that you will be disapointed on how the stilo performs on the road compared to the panda 100hp and you will need major suspension mods to get anywhere near the panda ;)

I thought they only did a 130 and a 150mjet?. O well everydays a school day . I was looking at a 150mjet Sporting myself but didn't buy it due to me finding it rolly polley on bends which I found quite dangerous for a car of that power, and I didn't find it as comfortable as my Punto Sporting believe it or not .

/me (= spank-o-phobic)...returned to the Panda section...
I never liked diesels in the first place...

:) Kidding - seriously, thanx.

How much fun? well I had my Stilo back today from the garage after a week driving around in a BMW 57 reg Turbo Diesel.

My car is mapped to around 150BHP and is lowered on Eibachs. I had more fun in the 5 minutes driving back to work than I would have had in a lifetime in the BMW.

As much as I like the Panda I cannot imagine it coming anywhere near a Stilo with 150BHP and decent springs regardless of the road type period. If I could buy another brand new Stilo I would without hesitation despite my hate of the dealers.

change of heart there bozzy, you've been on the unhappy side of the stilo recently, i thought you wanted rid too.

anyways, thats great to hear, i've driven a few cars, and still think the stilo in one of the best (y)

i'm completely biased though :p

Yes, my love for the yellow bint has been re-kindled as a result of driving boring motors for a week. In fairness I have been lucky with the car and to expect a 3 1/2 year old car not to have some small issues is a tad optomistic but it's the dealer that scares me, not the car.

However, in front of T14086 & NumanR I eat my proverbial hat as the Tech got it spot on today with the intercooler hose. Now where's that blushing emoticon?

I never tried Stilo before, but I tell you, the 100HP is pure joy! Im not looking for raw power (wouldnt mind either) - Im looking for a car that I will want to drive on and on and on, with low running costs & cheap insurance. Besides, I love smaller, nippy cars - thats why I wonder just how much sense would it make to jump "up two levels"...

I must admit I was rather puzzled why anyone would want to compare a Stilo to a Panda as they are totally different cars but I think I know where you're coming from.

I've driven both and I think the Panda is a great motor. Economical, easy & fun to drive with I'd imagine quite low running costs. Was I glad to get back in my Stilo? Sure I was :spin: - which shouldn't surprise anyone as that's the car I intended to buy in the first place (my Stilo wasn't a gift - no one parked it on my drive and posted the keys through the letter box - it was my choice)

From what you've said, I'd stick with the Panda - for pretty much the same reasons I'd rather stick with a Stilo :)

How much would that kinda spring upgrade cost?

Im after 3dr M-Jet version with 140 bhp which (as I read) should feel plenty for me for starters.

Also, what are the differences between the earlier and later models, the 3-dr and 5-dr versions, the 115, 120 and 140 or 150 bhp engines (Im thinking of brakes, suspension, clucth, coolers here)?

Thx a lot, F

My Eibachs cost about £150 and £80 to fit.

afaik the brakes/springs/clutch/cooler are standard. My clutch has been fine for nearly two years post re-map to around 150. I know there was a change in springs/setup in the 04 models as my springs would not fit mine (04). If I could get another Stilo JTD (new) I would be placing my order now. I tried the new Bravo last week and it didnt do it for me but it wasn't the diesel.

Thnx Bozzy.

Italian webpage Autoscout.it offers a nice collection of Stilos with amazing prices. You can get a new 120HP MJET (08/2007, 0km, 3years of waranty) for around 11500 EUR (around 8600 pounds) < now that seems a great price to me...
