Well, your wires should be along the lines of:
+12v
earth
signal (from coils)
illumination (sidelights)
possibly permanent +12v (battery)
Measure between each wire and the case of the rev counter, the one that shows zero ohms should be earth. Probably black.
Measure all the wires to the earth and note the resistances, then remove the bulb from the illumination and re-measure, the one that's changed will be the illumination.
That leaves three: +12v, signal, and permanent 12v.
Measure the resistances again. The highest resistance should be the signal from the coils, but you may need to trace the circuitry to find out properly.
Permanent 12v should show higher resistance than the switched 12v supply.
Really, it's a case of fiddling about if you don't have the right info. Maybe post the make on here and ask if anyone has the same?
