Scudo Glow Plug Relay

Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice about the problem I'm having with my van.
The van wouldn't start last week. Called AA and they said the glow plugs and relay were faulty. I've had the glow plugs replaced and also fitted a new relay. The van starts fine now. The problem is with the amount of time the relay supplies power to the glow plugs.

When the ignition is on there is power to the glow plugs for about 45 seconds before the power is cut. When the engine is running it appears that the power to the glow plugs does not switch off (I've held the tester there for over 2 minutes with the engine running and there is still power present at the glow plugs).

My question is:-

How long should the relay supply power to the glow plugs before switching off?

a) with just the ignition on.
b) after the engine has been started.

The relay has been replaced and the part number on the relay unit is PSA 9639912580 and the part number on the Fiat Invoice is 1348881080.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Scudo Glow Plug Relay

It depends on the engine temperature as to how long the preheat and postheat stays active.

Re: Scudo Glow Plug Relay

Hi, thanks for reply.
From a cold start the light on the dashboard stays on for about 5 seconds. When the engine is started there is power from the glow plug relay for about 3 minutes (I tested it again this afternoon). When the engine is warm the light on the dashboard stays on for 2-3 seconds and after starting the warm engine there is no power coming from the relay. I suppose the engine knows it it warm so does not turn the glow plugs on. This is exactly the the same with the old relay so I probably didn't need to buy the new relay.

The reason I bought the new relay was because the AA man said it should only provide power to the glow plugs for about 10-12 seconds in total and any more will burn the new glow plugs out. The new glow plugs are Beru GN016.

Do you think the amount of time the power is provided to the glow plugs sounds about right?

Thanks again.

Re: Scudo Glow Plug Relay

Hi, That would sound about right, The ECU would register the temp of the engine and tell the relay when to switch on and off. As for your AA man well, a lot of what they tell you is guess work although the glow plug relay is prone to failure on the scudos so keep the old one safe you may well need it in the future.
Thanks Oscar1 thanked for this post
