I have a small ski apartment up in the French alps and have decided rather than take the car I will take the 120 multijet Scudo.
Six gears, plenty of power and comfortable. Plus we get to take the bikes for some down hill fun etc.

Any tips on long journeys?

Is it possible to change the cig-socket front or rear so that it is permanently live? Taking fridge box for veggy food (not an option in France!)

I will report when I get back on the pros and cons of letting the van take the strain

Take some spare fuel in Jerry cans (y)

Allways keep an eye on these:

Oil - make sure it's not bubbly / discoloured / showing bits of metal in it
Water - watch your engine temp on the big hills and generally keep an eye on it's level!
Tyres pressures and tread / wear (check them after a few hundred miles a slight alignment problem might not show up on small round town type trips but on a long one on straightish roads tyre wear shows up quickly)

Check your spare tyre make sure it's 100% road legal and ready for action if anything goes wrong! Also check you have your jack and wheel brace ;) might also need a warning triangle etc - check the laws for the country you are in!

Top up your screen washer bottle too.

As for changing the lighter sockets - this is straight forward in principle - you just need to re-route the positive cable back to the positive terminal on the battery (with an inline fuse close to the battery) but it might be hard to get a wire from inside the van to under the bonnet - on my scudo I can't find any easy way to do this :( (1998 1.9td combinato)
