Ok this problem has got really bad now

Ive got a mk1 95 punt, and when im going down a flat road just rolling ( dont have to be in gear) it squeeks all around the car, coming from underneath.

Its not the exhuast ive checked that, that doesnt make any noise. Its not the front suspension as they are fine, and rear springs are fine...

What else can this be? I am going to put it in a garage but need a rough idea of what it could be so I dont get fobbed.

Any ideas?

I had this problem on my new Punto mk2,
At the slowest speed.

It seemed to be the handbrake cable near the rear of the car at the suspension bush, at each side it is held in by a clip, a sort of holder. The cable was just rubbing up and down creating the noise in this.
I got some pliers opened the holders a little more and put some insulating tape on the wire.

Also greased a spring at the rear of the car towards the middle of the car underneath.

Stopped it.

Spot on advice, same noise on my 1.2 8v 2000 so i greased the bushes hey presto no squeak (y)

Oh wicked, well first taks is to find them. Anyone have pics of where abouts they are ? as i dont know wot to look for

Can't help you with pics but just look under car and from centre of car follow the 2 thick cables(one on either side)towards the rear of the car and you can't miss the 2 bushes that sit in the clips.pop um out grease em,tape em the squeak should go away.

Ok when i pop the clips out and grease them and then tape them is this cover the clips in tape? or the area they clip into ?

No,when you pop the bushes(these are attatched to the handbrake cable) out of the clips just smother grease around the bushes and pop them back in. :nono:

Hi all...just bought a mk 2 Punto yesterday. Got it at a good price but it had a squeak coming from the rear driver side. Was driving me mad and I was worried that I'd bought a dud! :bang:

Googled for FIAT info and came across your forum and found this thread. Took myself down to Halfords and forked out on some grease. Greased up the handbrake cable - not sure if I greased the correct area but heaped the stuff on regardless - problem solved! So I'd just like to thank you all for your info.:worship:

hi, this is thread is old lol but i'm having that problem with my mk2b when i put the handbrake on it make a screeching noise, and when i press the brakes sometimes, how did you grease the handbrake cable?? from underneath or just from inside? thanks. you may guess i'm not a mechanic LOL :D :slayer: thanks!

Didn't notice that this thread hails from 2005! Oh well, it did the job regardless....

As for where to grease the handbrake cable, I took off the driver side rear wheel and went looking for a cable. Not being very mechanically minded I presumed I was looking for a piece of thick metallic wire... when in reality the cable is inside a casing (duh!). It's as clear as the nose on your face, you can't miss it. Then I just greased the sucker up... ie slathered grease on any part of it that came into contact with any other part of the car. 3 days have passed and still no squeaks. I anticipate that I'll be doing this regularly but having done it once I can see that it is only a 2 min job.

(I think the removing of the wheel might have been a bit of overkill but at least it gave me an excuse to get dirty and act like I knew what I was doing)

oh right great, thanks for that(y) only had the car a few weeks, don't know much about cars yet, didn't know anything about bikes when i got 1 but after i year i'm doing engine rebuilds etc :D thanks again! i'll have a look now :slayer:

hi again, just been out And had a look, ive greased the cables but theyre just metal lines like tubing, nothing's rubbing on anything that i can see, sounds like the cable in side the metal tubes is rubbing, i oiled it anyway and made no diff :(
