Hi, i recently took my engine to bits and had the cylinders horned becaused they were scored. We have replaced one chewed up piston, piston rings, big-end bearings and rebuilt the whole engine along with a 1.1 head as the 1.2 head was to chewed up to be used. We have used a 1.2 gasket and changed the cam to a 1.2 cam. Bolted it all up and tried to start it but it wont run. We re-did the timing and tried again and it almost started but then gave up and since then nothing. However, the car has got bearly any fuel left and the battery is almost dead so we are going to give it some fuel and are re-charging battery but if this has no effect what could be wrong?

We've checked the compression and thats ok, the spark plugs and ht leads are new and they're all sparking.

Thanks

Ok I have an update to this problem. We let it charge over night and gave it fuel - still no reaction BUT when i was trying to start it i turned the ignition on for a moment. The injector light came on but then went off like it always does on my car. Then shortly after I was turning it over the injector light came back on and ive noticed a weird buzzing kinda sound coming from the engine when i try and start it. Any clues?
Thanks

EDIT: Another thing i didnt mention, when starting the starter motor keeps stopping. What i mean is it turns over then like slows to a stop and then turns over again like its struggling to turn it. Ill try and upload a video to help show what i mean. Any responses would be brilliant im desprate hah

It could be that some parts don't have enough lubrication yet. When I did head gasket replacement it took me some time until it fired up.

It was stiff when we had put it all back together but now we've tried to run it a few times its become lubricated but thanks for he advice none-the-less (y)

I had the same when I put a new engine in a Pug 206 a few months back. Turned out the engine ground lead had a bad connection where it was bolted to the gearbox. Aluminium and brass reacting and all that.......

Try putting a jump lead from the battery neg terminal to a clean chunk of metal on the engine, and have another go at starting it.

You never know.........

That's incorrect timing by the sound of it. Are all the ignition leads in the right places? Could also be the piston you changed. Was it the right type? It could be too high, causing it to make the compression too high, or actually hitting the head. Take the spark plugs out, and do another video.........

No, I've listened again, and it's definitely timing. Id doesn't happen on the same cylinder every time. Have you put the crankshaft pulley on 120' out of position? Is the little pin on the timing belt pulley located properly in the hole on the alternator belt pulley? As I mentioned before, check ignition lead positions as well.

The leads are 2-3-1-4 from the front to the back of the engine and ima go jack up and check the pulley now. Thing is we checked the piston was at tdc and the cam was in correct position. When that didnt work we turned the crank 180 degree's till it was tdc again and still nothing but ill go check again regardless

So, front coil feeds 2&3 and back coil is doing 1&4? That's as the book says. In your video, it looked like the spark plug leads were wired differently from how you say. Is the low tension wiring connected to the coils the right way round? Do you know what I'm on about with the locating pin on the bottom pulley?

Your a genius. The pin wasent located properly. Ive moved the pulley around and retimed and it started w00t. Just one thing still tho, it was like puffing fuel out the intake and when it started it rev'd to its max so i turned it off. Any idea's?

EDIT: I've turned the crank around 180 degree's incase it was that as it started a fire in the intake.... whats the deal? cheers

No.1: Sh*tloads of fuel down the hole, so it'll be running like a bag of spanners till it's burnt it off.

No.2: You've probably got the throttle cable hitched up on somethin, or not re-connected the brake servo vacuum hose. It's either an open throttle, or a large vacuum leak somewhere.

I mean cranked it around a full turn on the crank only until its on tdc again. We seem to have the timing correct but when we start it its like blowing fuel out the inake and then it finally starts but rev's off the scale then i shut it down so it don't blow up  I think it may be a vaccum problem thouh because one of the bolts holding the intake on has snapped so it won't be fully sealed will it? thanks

Did you re-shim the valve clearances when you fitted the new camshaft? Did you set the timing using the marks on the engine, or the marks on the belt?

No we used a cam and shims/cam followers from a 1.2 in a 1.1 head didnt od anything with the valves, and yes used the timing marks on the engine

EDIT: We going to go and get a new bolt from local scrappie for the throttle body as one of the two bolts broke will be back shortly
