For my Mk.1 75 with 1.2 8V engine.
I'm in the process of replacing the thermostat and in doing so have found the source of the oil leak on my engine;
YUK!

Its coming from the cover of the bearing of the cam shaft, which is also the same casting that the coil packs are mounted to.
It looks like the "O" ring may be the cause of the problem;

Does anyone know the part number or a link to get the "O" ring from (my local dealer would take about 1/2 hour to find this part on the computer system and then I'd have to order it anyway!). Any help muchly appreciated.

If its just the "O ring" your after could you not just take it to either your local dealer or a local motor shop and ask for one the same size ?

your dealer will be able to find this part on the computer in no time

it will cost about 35p

the reason for this ring is because on much older versions of this engine that is were the distributor would have been driven before electronic ignition was brought in

so as it's the dizzy drive it needs to be able to spin to set the ignition timing

one other alternative is just to run silicone round the thing after the seal clean the hole and stick it in again it's not like you need to remove it again for anything i put a new seal on mine aswell as silicone so mines never gonna leak

and even if you do it's not stuck permanent

also i notice you still have a plastic cover over your coils

this should be removed and thrown in the bin

as they cause coils to overheat

fiat released a service news about it years ago telling all dealers to remove them

Hi all
Thanks for the advice, I went down the dealer an got an O ring today. Anyway now the new thermostat is fitted its nice and toasty inside! and the engine now only take about 5-10 minutes from cold to get to the mid way point on the temp gauge.

For Littlepip17.
Thanks for the tips. I will put some blue Hydromar round as well for good measure.

I have kept the coil cover fitted, Ive now had the car for ten years and soon after I bought it, I had two failures on the original coils; I replaced one and then the other went shortly afterwards, but since then no problems, probably 8 years of faultless motoring so far, so I think I keep it there for when I'm driving through big puddles! (I even took away the spare coil I kept in boot, because I hadn't required it for so long).

yea fiat also made better coils as replacements to get round the problem

if you look at mk2s they don't even have a cover here that's how little it does

fiat stopped fitting it around 97 when it became apparent what it was casusing

good to hear everything is working nicely

Hello!

There is a leak from the same place in my punto. I replaced the o-ring I got from the Fiat dealer and also put some Hermetite Red around to follow littlepip17's story about sealing the whole thing. Now, was it a good idea to put this red stuff around? I can see that Phil used blue Hydromar, which is pretty much the same stuff I believe. I'am worried because I left a sample of Hermetite Red to see how it behaves and it seems to be like the Plasticine - doesn't stick much, crumbles and also seems to be not shock resistant - any crumbs getting inside wouldn't do any good, I suppose.

I attach a picture. Just please, don't hit me hard, you learn all your life long ;-) You can see the o-ring peeking from underneath the red stuff (I kept it to the right side of the o-ring). And it's all put back together now but I haven't started the engine up yet...

(to see it you have to paste it into your browser address field, as apparently I am not allowed to post links)

Ok, I removed this red stuff. I'm not gonna risk. It takes ages to clean it off. Thanks for help :D
