Does anybody know how similar the new 1368cc FIRE engine in the 2007 Panda Punto etc. is to the 1242cc unit?

I have seen cams that are sold to fit to both 16v engines, so assume that the head is v similar, i suspect that the engine is therefore v similar, although i have notice that it has a increased stroke of 2mm as well as increased bore size - this would suggest a different bottom end

There appears to be enough meat in the 1242cc block to rebore to 72mm (1242cc is 69.6mm), o would it therefore be possible to fit pistons from a 1368cc engine to a rebored 1242cc block?
Has anybody rebored a 1242cc and fitted oversize pistons? if so how far is it possible to go?

Cheers, Col

yes people have overbored the 1242, but I think the most I've heard of is around 1308cc :(

I'd imagine the cams would be similar, but maybe the buckets are different, or the followers are a different length/ratio to give a different lift???

blocks would be different, the 1242 is old old news, I would have hoped fiat have updated it ;)

IF you could overbore the 1242 block to 1368 and fit the pistons (maybe need to skim the 2mm off the top iff possible, then re valve releif them), and arrange some kind of 16v MPI head with some major work, you'd be looking at quite a POTENT n/a motor.

good luck(y)

Block is the same as the newer 1242 block. 1242 bore is 70.8mm and 78.89mm stroke. Bore of 1368 is 72mm and stroke 84mm. Cylinder heads are identical as are cam housings. The buckets/hydraulic lifters are identical. The cams fit either cam housing but are slightly different in profile.

The ceiling for both engines is about 130bhp. To go further than that you need to uprate first of all conrods.

Thanks Oldschool, so in theory a 1242cc block could sustain bores of 72mm, and would it then be possible to fit the 11:1 pistons from a 1368cc to a 1242cc crank?

I was not aware that there were new/old 1242cc blocks, do you know of the dates/No.s that they ran from?

I was hoping i may be able to run a standard bottom end just replacing the rod bolts to begin with.

Finally any ideas where i may be able to lay my hands on some cams? or some idea of cam profiles.

Thanks for the feedback...

Col

I don't know for sure.

but I would imagine there are minor mods, like oil squirters under the piston skirts and improved oil ways etc. as for dates I have no idea, I could recite EVERY engine volvo improvement on 1983> redblocks.
but fiats, I know little:p
