im not sure that my car has ever been serviced in her eight years of life.
do you think i should get it done, and what do they actually do when servicing?

Get a cheap full service done (40point service etc) as they only cost around £70 but includes new plugs/filters/oil etc.These services are good value & are used by dealers to spot faults on your car in the hope they will get the benefit of the work/your customer.Let them do the hard stuff & you do easy stuff...if any of course,depending on condition of your car.

Yeah you should get it done most people service there cars every summer as said above they re-new spark plugs,air filter,oil filter & oil even if you had the time on your hands save yourself some money could do the first two things yourself easy peasy but with the oil its easy as well if you have the right equipment...
