Hi All,
Right i've not long bought my first Punto
It is a 2000 1.2 8v with 80k on the clock and the other day the issues started.
I drive it twice a week to my place of work about 6 miles from where i live without any issues except for an spilt second misfire for the first time i accelerate and then it goes. How ever this week i was 4 miles in on a cold morning and the engine temp light came on (got basic speed/fuel gauge) and when i got to work it was hissing under the bonnet. I drove home that night and same thing happened again. When i stopped i found coolant to be on minimum, the water looks like its got copper/gold flakes in it and is brown. The oil filler cap is covered in gunk and the fan is constantly going flat out.
I had the same thing with a Cinq i once owned so am going for headgasket again...:bang:
I've gone on Ebay looking for a kit but there appears to be different engine types/codes (eg:176, Y10) How do i find out which mine is??
Any tips or things to watch out for when doing the H/G would be appreciated too.
Thanks guys and gals :)

A mk2 is 188 Chassis
You have the 1.2 8v You engine is something like A400.xxx

You need a bog standard 1.2 8v HG SET

Advice
Sump is supported via trolley jack with some wood on it
Dont Jack straight on sump
When refitting Engine mount - do so with the engine still supported
Use Good fitting sockets
Need Fresh Oil - Oil filter - Coolant
You may need an Oil flush and Coolant flush too, as there will now be crap in both systems
You will need to have the Head skimmed, regardless if its flat or not, you need it also to be clean :)
Take your time :)

Things you should put in
New Water pump and Cam-belt
New thermostat - but these can be skipped IF there is service history and or okay condition

Thanks you two. Great to get that information and has made pricing parts much easier, but i have since found that for what it would cost me in parts, i could spend buying a s/hand 16v engine with 50k from a punto that has been rear ended...what would you do??

Buy a mot failer punto off gumtree etc,
and swap engine over.

or look on ebay you can pick good 8v lump up for around 100 notes or less.

I agree with Dave. Doing a hg on an 8v you know is a lot less risky than an unknown mill.
Be realistic about what's going to be replaced. Check the stat and pump. Timing belt ?
As it has overheated you should skim and reusing the head bolts would be doubtful ( get a good 6 point 13mm socket btw).
I replaced ours 22k miles ago with just the gasket, coolant and oil/filter but I had caught it very early and it never overheated and I wasn't that pushed if I had to do it again and it was only going to be me stuck on the side of the road if it went pearshaped.

In the process of doing my mrs the now when you remove head check for any corrosion a one day job has turned into a week with waitin for parts and gettin skimmed and so far stands just over 200quid but thats good for the amount of parts i am changing

I would have thought it'd all could be done for about £100?

Depends how far into you go
Like me i did them cheap - ie reuse belt - stat - pump(not cause btw)

But if it overheated, you'd need all the new stuff which does go up in price

Well i got head skimmed twice and stem seals done £50 then timing belt kit , hg set, bolts , thermostat ,waterpump, plugs, leads, oil and coolant i would say for just ova 200 quid thts brilliant :) well i thought anyway
