Hi All,

My mate has just text me to say his mk2b head gasket has blown and he has an oil fault. I'm just checking in terms for price how much it would be for a garage to fit a new engine?

I've seen engines for around £200 with decent milage (his car has quite a high milage). The garage that the car was recovered to quoted him around £1000 to fix it.

You'll probably end up paying much the same from the same garage.

Without knowing if it's an 8v or a 16v, which part of the world and what the "oil fault" is, it's impossible to comment further.

Most garages "you get towed to" charge way over the odds because they've got you by the short and curlies.

I didn't think they put the 8v in the mk2b. Anyway it's a 16v and we're in kent. We can move the car as I know someone with a transporter so we are not stuck with this garage.

Based on previous issue I know he had with this car, I would reckon its an oil pressure issue.

I'd do it for £250 or so (the engine change) , maybe a bit off for the old engine, a bit more for a new clutch. But, then you've got to factor in other bits it makes sense to change which the engine is out -- water pump, timing bely, tension, etc.

Still, you're unlikely to get Liverpool labour rates in Kent.........

I paid £125 for engine fitting about a month or so ago, but i really did need an engine replacement as my hg blew, big ends went amongst many other problems. But if you expecting cheap from a garage youd be lucky.

The guy i used was a self employed mechanic working from home, i drove the car to him and left it with him and it was fixed the next day around 5ish :D

Good luck!

Benny
