Hello All
getting a grinding noise[strange but i dont here it every time i use car ] when i apply the brakes, the garage where i bought it replaced the brake pads when they serviced it after buying it of them, this was 5,000 miles ago, should they have lasted longer, does it sound like its a brake pad problem?? also had new brake server 6 months ago, could it be connected with that, car had full service in October by a independent fiat garage.

They should last longer. I changed my pads 25.000KM ago and they are still fine (according to the garage). I didnt buy original because the fiatgarage told me they were expensive and crap, bought some thirdparty. And my drivingstyle isnt very nice to the pads ;) .. Ofcourse, if you discs are damaged the pads get worn out faster. But your garage should have checked that when you chagned the pads.

could be a siezed claiper slider, in which case, on that caliper, one pad is doing all the work......... 5k miles is bugger all though, thats 2 months driving for me.............

Thanks Lads For Replying..
Could it be anything else, something i have overlooked maybes?
i only here it now and then, could the siezed claiper slider, unseeze
itself and thats why i,m not heering noise all the time??

i would get a free independant break check. most garages that do breaks will do a free front break safety check for you. you are under no obligation to buy from them.

onm my punto i hear a faint grind noise everytime i use my breaks its been like it for last 2 years. but the problem is alot worse in winter and in summer it goes away. i am putting mine down to crap fiat pads and all teh salt on the roads. i have jhad them checked and no problems found and they have now been on car for 2 years.

Well i called into the garage[Rowes Honda] where i bought the Punto, and saw the man at service desk, told him what i said in my post above,he went out and looked at the car coz he wanted to check the disks, came back and said they looked fine, his words were they look fine and nice and shiny lol..told me to come back if the brakes felt as though they were getting worse.he pointed out as i am only doing 80-90 miles a week, coz the cars not being used it could possibly be that, doesnt sound a good answer to me,so now going to go,and get them checked at week end ,somewhere else.doesnt it sound like ive been fobbed off??they have allready fobbed me off, when the head gasket went, they actually said it was ok ,until i proved otherwise by getting a independent fiat garage to check it.

I've had the same problem.

My '01 Punto ELX has only done around 24k and around 4000 over the last 2 years.

When we put the car in for it's MOT 2 years ago the back brakes got done. In January this year the front ones needed done. I've started using the car for work and do a round trip of 60 miles a day usually on motorways and the brakes squeal when you touch them.

Put the car in the garage and got told it was common in Fiat's esp the front brakes. He checked the brakes and said they were fine and had loads of mileage left. The squeal was caused by brake dust.

The garage put something on the brakes to attract the dust and it was fine for a few days. Now it's back worse than ever.

Any suggestions how to fix it? This is the first real bother I have had.

Same bother here, kwik fit changed rear shoes, said fronts were fine.Ok for few days then squeal again.Took it back in the other day, they said again brakes were fine, just they were dirty. The squeal stopped for a day,now its back again.
Its really annoying,i play loud music so my nerves dont get too shot when town driving.
Anyone had a solution to this?
Cheers
Al

If you buy universal fluid from accessory shop etc get Dot 4 grade.
When I got my 94 55S it had a dragging caliper the problem was the front flexi brake pipe it had rotted away inside & was acting like a one way valve you could force fluid thro' it to the caliper but the fluid couldn't flow back when you released the pedal, it shagged the pads & the disk very quickly!

Thanks for that info Keith...
btw what is est,d cost of having a small garage replace and
supply front brake pads, will i be paying more than £100 ??
