I've got a Punto MK2 2001 1.2 8v.

First of all: - The gearbox makes a whining noise when not accelerating in 1st and 2nd (coasting in gear), as you move up and try the same in 3rd, 4th and 5th, either the whining stops or it's just not that noticeable. When accelerating it seems fine as you can't hear the whining noise. Gear selections up and down are fine, which I think means the synchroniser is fine, as there is no crunching or difficult gear changes (I had the syncro go in a 1.2 16v 1999 Bravo!)

Secondly: - When it is idling in neutral no pedals pressed, I can hear a clicking noise (which I believe is the thrust bearing on the clutch) as when you put the clutch in the clicking stops until you release it again. The clutch is also really jumpy when cold and you really have to really slip the clutch to stop it from kangarooing the ca, however this is ok when it’s warm/hot.

Please can you let me know what you think could be wrong with the Gearbox and Clutch?

The bloke at the gearbox place that I got the Bravo fixed at about 3 years ago, said I might as well get the clutch done if taking the gearbox off and getting it sorted too, which I agree with. He also said that the problem sounds like the pilot bearing in the gearbox.

I got quoted £325 to have the gearbox on my car repaired (they will do all the work remove and re-fit the box etc) and fit a new clutch (that I’ll supply). Is this a good price and is the work is worth getting done? And how long is it likely to last if I don’t get it done?

Cheers Marc
