Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has fitted a larger engine into their Panda/Y10 - If so I would like to know:

-) What engine was used
-) What other parts were needed (eg new gearbox etc.)
-) What else had to be done (eg new engine mountings welded on etc.)
-) Was there a noticeable power increase? Or was the new engine so handicapped by other issues that it wasn't worthwhile?

I am thinking around Fiat Tipo 1.4/ Uno 1.3 but if it is too much hassle I might save up and go for a bigger Lancia.

Regards,

Martin

discusses a Dutch 1242 (FIRE) Panda conversion.

The issue which would concern me is the distributor (and fuel pump) drive off the camshaft - later (larger) engines may not have the dog or lobe required - if you're running with a carb.

I think the thread mentioned above regards a conversion using a Uno 1108 engine and thats about the biggest Fire you can get without going into fuel injected engines. You can also try to carb a bigger engine and run it with an aftermarket electronic ignition, but I'd say its not really a straightforward swap.

Note that the Lancia Y10 used a mpi 1.3 engine, but I imagine that converting a carbed car to run an electronic injection engine would take a fair bit of doing.

The 1.1 carbed Fire should be quite entertaining in the lightweight Panda even in standard trim and apparently they respond well to mods, so you could easily be looking at a Panda with a power to weight ratio of 100 bhp per ton with a bit of fettling.

They do fit, as shown here: http://www.teampandamonium.com/pages/welcome.html .
They've put some rather tastey looking carbs on a Punto 1.2 engine which looks fun too. Suprising what you can do with a panda.
